Christopher Nolan reveals official Batman 3 title

And updates us on the Riddler

Christopher Nolan has revealed the official title of his third Batman flick. It'll be called The Dark Knight Rises. Awesome.

That's the first bit of big Batman news. The second is that The Riddler won't be in the film.

Nolan said: "We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones."

When pressed about whether the villain would be covered in question marks, Nolan gave a negative response. “It won’t be the Riddler,” he said.

All very, very exciting. We love the title, it's a clever bit of branding designed to remind us of The Dark Knight's brilliance. As if we needed it.

The Dark Knight Rises is released July 20 2012.

What do you think? And who's Tom Hardy playing? Tell us!

I fail to see how the title is 'a clever bit of branding'; am I missing something? It's the same name, is it not? Swapping the traditional number that most sequels feature for the word 'rises' is hardly a revolutionary marketing strategy.

Call me wrong but I personally think that Robin will make an appearance in some capacity and I personally don't think thats a bad idea if its handled well and with enough darkness to his origin.

I always found the Riddler and Joker to be similar, they both use puzzles and tricks to cause mayhem. I still think Deadshot and Black Mask are the most plausible fit for Nolans Universe.

The title will probably change at the last minute so as to screw up the fake merchandise sellers illegal products.

I always thought the little scene at the end of The Dark Knight with Gordon's son might have been a nod to the inclusion of a Robin character. But with the Catwoman rumors, might that all not be a little too much to take on? I'd hate to see it spread too thin, like Spiderman 3 or Iron Man 2. That said, Nolan can certainly handle complex.

Yes, the Joker and Riddler both have a modus operandi of traps and tricks but with the Joker its all about the chaos, destruction and mayhem they can cause. He's a true psychotic. I think if Riddler was done properly it would work, the entire film would be one dark mindgame between Batman and Riddler, with the Riddler holding Gotham to ransom to prove he's smarter than Batman, pure Ego vs. the Joker's psychotism

I'd prefer 'The Sunny Morning' or something. What a boring title. Anyway, as long as there's no Catwoman either and we get a villain or two that has never made it to the screen before (much like they used The Scarecrow and Ra's al Ghul in Begins rather than the usual rogues gallery) I'll enjoy it.

I think Deadshot would be a fantastic villain as if Nolan does do a Superman film it can be a crossover character

Oh God! Does the world really need another Batman Movie starring bl00dy Christian Bale with his his irritating, stupid evil Disney Wolf with a Lisp voice? Christopher Nolan can bring as much realism and tech to the Batman Franchise as he likes, but its always gonna be a film about a man prancing around dressed as a bat with a stupid, impractically long cape. Heath Ledgers slappy chopped performance as the joker was so overrated (i'm pretty sure that it wouldnt have been hailed as the genius performance that it was if he was still alive today) I loved Batman Begins as an origins story and it was by far a much more solid, well rounded movie than DK, yet recieved no where near the recognition of its over hyped, trendy sequel

Generally i don't post on these sites all that often however right now i feel the need to do so! All you guys whinging about the riddler not being it for the reason that he is a "third rate joker" as i have heard him be referred to before. The riddler is not a third rate joker as unlike the joker who is essentially in it for the anarchy that he creates the riddler is intelligent about what he does and he does it to prove his intelligence and that he is better than others! And as for the Riddler not being in the film i think that is pretty good because despite how awesome he is i agree with naughts that he would not suit Nolan's Batman image and feel!

No idea who Hardy is going to be BUT I would absolutely love, above anything/everything else for Anarky to be the 'bad guy', he would put Batman in a really interesting place and would prove to be the perfect foil for the dark knight.
