Comic-Con 2010: Ruffalo and Renner join The Avengers

Pair confirmed as Hulk and Hawkeye

The Avengers

Marvel are continuing to do their level best to steal the show at this year’s Comic-Con, with Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner now confirmed as the studio’s latest signings to don the spandex for The Avengers.

The casting comes hot on the heels of last week’s announcement that Joss Whedon will be directing the project, and was revealed at the close of a pair of discussion panels for Captain America and Thor.

After a quick teaser trailer, it was left to Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr., to make the big reveal, describing The Avengers as “the most ambitious movie ever”, before introducing Renner and Ruffalo to the stage.

Ruffalo has arguably the more daunting task, with the Shutter Island star charged with squeezing himself into Bruce Banner’s purple mini-shorts. Renner meanwhile, will star as Hawkeye, the arrow-toting marksman with the circus background.

Sam Jackson, Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner…it’s a cast that to have both fanboys and newcomers foaming at the mouth, and even Whedon was struggling to contain his excitement.

“I had a dream all my life,” joked the director, “and it wasn’t this good.” If he can manage to convert dream into reality, the Dark Knight could have some competition for Best Comic-Book Movie Ever. Watch out Bats…

To be honest the way Marvel are handling the entire array of super heroes, spin off's and now a full on collaboration, it wouldnt surprise me if the entire group have been recast before the avengers starts shooting......first rhody, now hulk for like the tenth time, ok maybe third time but it will only be his 3rd mainstream movie appearance(3 movies, 3 actors) this movie stinks of quantity over quality and im now not looking forward to it, thor pics look c**p. Cap america is Chris evans, nuff said!!!!!! oh but on the plus side we do still have RDJ!!!!!..............oh and yes im f*****g WHINING........(ITS MY RIGHT, ITS A MOVIE SITE AND MY OPINION IS MOVIE LAW)...... Mattdredd out! x

"the Dark Knight could have some competition for Best Comic-Book Movie Ever. Watch out Bats…" Sorry George but Joss Whedon isn't even in the same leaugue or calibre as the very distinguished and talented Christopher Nolan. I'm more of a MARVEL fan with over 5000+ comic books, 90% of which are MARVEL, but Nolan is a true cinema auteur, a classic film maker in every sense of the word. Whedon is a fast food pulp fiction writer.

The Avengers really needs to break new ground in terms of pushing the envelope and giving us a truly dramatic action packed sci-fi cinematic epic. I somehow doubt we'll get that with Joss Whedon directing. He does not have enough cinematic experience. He's a screenwriter from episodic TV who doesn't fully understand the visual language / structure of cinema. He should stick to what he does best as a screen writer. The last thing I want to see is The Avengers as an extended TV episode with trendy "Joss" dialogue. He has been touted as some one who works well with an ensemble cast. Isn't that part of a director's everyday skill set anyway? I'm more looking forward to who the Director of Photography will be.Hopefully MARVEL will have the sense to hire an experienced professional. He along with the camera men and film crew may be this film's only saving grace.
