Could a Hobbit star be announced at Comic Con?

James McAvoy and David Tenant are rumoured...

Rumour has it that the identity of the actor taking on The Hobbit will be announced by Peter Jackson at the San Diego Comic Con next week.

The LA Times' Hero Complex blog is hearing whispers that thanks to Jackson's first-ever live appearance (he's tended to send videos from the set of LOTR and King Kong before) to promote District 9, he could also be bringing Hobbit news.

So who is in the hotspot to play Bilbo Baggins for Guillermo del Toro right now?

Like a good marriage, it's something old, something new, something borrowed and something... Who?

Let's see then - old: James McAvoy, who has been touted for ages (and still seems to be a front runner).

Standing in for something new and also borrowed is Harry Potter himself, who is likely too busy playing the boy/teen wizard to nab the part. And chances are he's too closely identified with the role for now to play another genre icon.

And as for Who? David Tennant. It seems pure coincidence that the soon-to-be-former Timelord is attending for Dr Who (and the bigger rumour there is that he might be announcing a Who movie).

But while he's less likely than, say, McAvoy, he'd be great in the role.

We'll be sure to report from the Con next week should an announcement be made, and don't forget to follow the TF Twitter feed, as we'll be tweeting like crazy...

So which of those could you see as Bilbo? Or do you have a better idea?

Of those three, I'd go with McAvoy. Radcliffe seems like a nice enough fella, but he couldn't act his way out of a paper bag.

Radcliffe won't do at all. McAvoy is the logical choice, but there's something about him i don't really like. I can't quite put my finger on it. Tennant would be interesting. I'd rather see him do this than a Doctor Who movie. (I think Doctor WHo should stay on the small screen. And besides, if a movie is made surely the new Doctor will be playing it and not Tennant?). Despite what i've just said though, if McAvoy has got it (and i wouldn't be at all surprised if he has), then i'm sure he'd do a good job.

it should be Ian Holm again! Biblo wasn't that young when he went on his quest, he was actually fairly old, his last big aventure, where he found the ring and kept on wearing it thus he stayed the same age when we met him in LOTR. When we saw him again without the ring in Rivendale he was older looking and looked the right age for 111. AND to top that Ian Holm himself doesnt age that much over the years, compare him to the film Alien back 30 years ago, he doesn't look that much different AND AND AND we all know he can play Bilbo really well as we've already seen him in that role! Ian should play Bilbo Baggins once again!

James McAvoy is my first choice to play Bilbo. He is one of the most talented young actors out there. Martin Freeman is my second choice. David Tennant would also be a good choice. Daniel Radcliffe not so much.

I would love to see John Simm in this role. He'd be excellent, as he always is, and it would be fun to see him finally get the broader recognition he deserves. If not Simm, then Ian Holm, of course. I care more about the actor's ability than whether or not he fits the exact appearance of the original Bilbo in the book or in previous LOTR movies. Weren't also Frodo supposed to be in his 40s or something? And yet he was played by an actor half that age. The conclusion is, I have to go for Simm. Obviously. But I doubt that the filmmakers realize what an inspired decision that would be... :-)

Im sorry but nobody should play this role apart from Ian Holm. As Bananamilkshake says Bilbo looks the same in The Lord of the Rings as he does in The Hobbit, so why get a younger star to play the role that was performed magnificently by Ian Holm? I can understand that it is quite an adventurous film for a 78 year old man to take part in but to me it just wouldn't be the same without him.
