Could next Star Wars feature a female protagonist?

Plus, Lucasfilm announces no more 3D prequel treatments

As the dust continues to settle upon the sudden announcement that J.J. Abrams will be taking the helm for the new Star Wars film, an intriguing story has come out suggesting that the main character in the new film might be female.

/Film have reported that when Matthew Vaughn was being considered for the position, he had pitched Chloë Grace Moretz to the studio as the leading lady he had in mind for the project.

Whether or not that was a piece of potential casting specific to Vaughn’s vision for the film remains to be scene, but it would be an intriguing change of pace for a traditionally male-dominated franchise.

Meanwhile, Abrams has offered the first few tidbits of reaction to his sudden appointment to E! Online, and as you’d expect, they’re not giving very much away.

“It really is an incredible thing,” said the director. “Even more so, it’s wildly surreal. It’s obviously way too early to talk specifics, but I’m excited to actually start it.”

Meanwhile, Deadline has revealed that Lucasfilm will not release any further 3D treatments of the prequel series. The studio had been planning to refit the entire trilogy, but those plans have now been shelved in order to focus on the new film.

Star Wars: Episode VII is scheduled to open in the UK in 2015.

Would you like to see a female protagonist in the new film? Tell us, below!

In my opinion I think that they should continue the franchise not long after the events of Episode 6 and recast the main players. My thoughts - Ryan Gosling as Luke, Amy Adams as Leia, Nathan Fillion as Han Solo and a generic tall guy for Chewbacca.

Yeah that's basically the worst thing they could do, they should set it as time already past with all the previous stars returning but much older (there real age) and have us return to this universe as there is new trouble a brewing! I heard a while ago an idea about luke becoming head of the New Jedi order/ council, Han and leia having twins prob one good one a bit dodge, and have an emense twist/ sub plot, and a feel of the dark side from the past still apparent or having left its mark on the universe even though vader/ sidious are dead etc. Forget new actors and using apparent new talent to overshadow screen legends they aren't needed and episode 7,8 & 9 should have been made a long time ago, but it's time has come so let's not throw whatever quality star wars has left to the dogs in order to try and appeal to making it current yadda yadda, some new actors / actresses is obvious but the original trilogy was amazing for a reason, one of which was the cast!

Mattsimus, you have pretty much just summed up the Expanded Star Wars Universe in 20 words. Funny to think of Lucas' original arguement regarding Ep 7-9, he once said that the Star Wars saga was about the Skywalker legacy. Well, if they keep the idea of Han and Leia having force-sensitive children, then the Skywalker legacy is retained for the new trilogy. Star Wars - Episode VII: Legacy of the Force (anyone?)

And I meant these 20-ish words (SPOILER ALERT): "luke becoming head of the New Jedi order/council, Han and leia having twins prob one good one a bit dodge"

"Legacy Of The Force", for once a decent title, I like that. The story-points mentioned about have already been covered in comic books, novels and video games over the last 30 years since Jedi, but if they take the best elements and put them together to form the basis of Episode VII, then this could be something very special film-wise... I have faith in Abrams, I think he'll make the right decisions and Star Wars fans will rejoice and believe again come 2015. Fingers crossed.

@alexr lol 21 words to be exact and as simple as it might seem, I'm happy to see that progression as long as its good, they have released ex amount of comics, novels, games etc and on one of the other feeds someone else mentioned in the books they continued Luke taking over n Han / Leia having like 20+ kids etc! Bottom line is Quality .... NOT QUANTITY! Having said that I'm up for a trilogy. I'm glad it's Abrams, prob should have given home the prequals too.

Oh n "Legacy of the Force" is good, prob too good to be a sub - title though, given the previous efforts, probably be something like, "seed of the dark side" "light side of Luke" "rise of the sith" "Legend of skywalker" "fall of the force" .......... "Sith begins"?.... Actually some of them aren't bad haha £20 on light side of Luke?

Recasting any of the original characters would be an atrocious idea.

Thankfully, Hamill, Fisher and Ford have all stated they'd be up for returning, so that's the first hurdle, the principle actors won't say no and hopefully the guy working on the script will know this and write in older versions of Luke, Leia and Han knowing they'll make themselves available for the roles :)

I'd like to be the first to complain here about the fact that Disney isn't doing any more 3D treatments. You know they actually stopped after EPISODE I!? This was my only chance to ever see the original trilogy in theaters and Disney shat on it to promote their Star Trek sequels. If only they had just started with Episode IV..

please branch out into another part of the universe with a new arc, i don't wish to see another 9 hours of Skywalker family angst cos it's so predictable. why don't they totally invert some storylines, like instead of a poor boy it could be some royal rich kid that starts a rebel alliance, or joins the sith.

Luke is the only original character I'd like to see return, as I've said before having him as a master running the Jedi Academy would work. As for Solo and Leia having them return all old and fat would just be horrible.

Hahaha how brutal! Why if they return would they have to be fat? lol, they are rich n can train and actually Harrison ford is quite good at getting in shape but to be fair, they are older and the focus could be on there kids, and being led / trained by luke or another master! C'mon Yodi wasn't a pin up for gods sake, either way you def cant recast old characters if you do it will be last nail in coffin and star wars is officially dead! Its the forces last chance as far as im concerned and it needs to finish......on top!
