Creepy first trailer for Ethan Hawke's Sinister: watch now

Stay out of the attic

Sinister, the new horror film from Scott Derrickson, has released a spine-chilling new trailer in which Ethan Hawke's new home is found to be harbouring a terrible secret.

Hawke stars as a true-crime novellist who moves his family into a new house, site of a mass suicide by the previous occupants. Poking around in the attic, he stumbles across a collection of home videos belonging to said family, several of which are more than a little disturbing.

Foolishly, he ends up watching the lot, only later realising that in doing so, he has inadvertently awakened something otherworldly with designs on his young daughter.

Pretty creepy stuff, we think you'll agree. There's a touch of the Saw dummy about "Mr Boogie" but we always found him eerie, so that's no bad thing. Meanwhile, the crew have a very decent horror pedigree, with Derrickson having directed The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, and producer Jason Blum having worked on Insidious and the Paranormal Activity series.

Co-starring the reliably excellent Vincent D'Onofrio as a paranormal expert, Sinister will open in the US on 5 October 2012, with a UK release date to be confirmed. You'll never watch a home-video again without looking for faces in the bushes...

I feel the same about Insidious - the end absolutely ruined it. Up until then it was pretty damn scary. Hopefully this will last out. Ethan Hawke's a pretty reliable actor too. Looking positive.

Scary stuff, I think the majority of Horror films come with bad final acts.
