Dan Aykroyd talks Ghostbusters 3

Film will shoot in spring 2012

Poor old Dan Aykroyd. He’s been talking about a third Ghostbusters movie for longer than we can remember, and yet the project remains very much at the development stage.

However, a recent radio interview (picked up by ComingSoon) suggests that things might finally be on the move.

“Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray,” he says, when asked whether the original Peter Venkman would be returning.

“We have an excellent script. What we have to remember is that Ghostbusters is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and [contributed] to it in a massive way, as [did] the director and Harold [Ramis], myself and Sigourney [Weaver].

“The concept is much larger than any individual role,” he continues, “and the promise of Ghostbusters 3 is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood.”

Aykroyd wasn’t forthcoming on just who that young blood might be played by, but he did have a few tidbits of plot information to share.

“My character, Ray, is now blind in one eye and can’t drive the Cadillac,” he says. “He’s got a bad knee and can’t carry the packs. Egon is too large to get into the harness. We need young blood and that’s the promise. We’re gonna hand it to a new generation.”

Previous reports had confirmed that Dana Barrett’s son will feature as one of the new Ghostbusters, whilst Venkman’s reappearance may well be as a ghost. Presumably, if Murray refuses to commit, that part will be non-pivotal enough to phase out altogether.

Fingers crossed Aykroyd can persuade his old chum to make one last appearance. To be honest, we’re not sure how much we’d want to see another Ghostbusters film if Murray wasn’t involved in a significant role...

Do you want to see a Ghostbusters threequel, or should Aykroyd leave well alone? Share your thoughts below.

God, bad idea Dan. No wonder Bill Murray is avoiding it. He hated Ghostbusters 2 and that was actually fairly decent so if he is avoiding 3 with severe stealth then it must be stinkin'. Why they need to 'pass it on'... to today's lesser comedy actors? The guys today....who are we talking about here... Seth Rogan!? ...couldn't tie the laces of Murray, Ackroyd and Ramis! Leave it.

Surely there's some sort of legal ramifications in handing over unlicensed nuclear powered particle accelerators to a new generation? I imagine the riots would've been a whole lot different if they handed them over to our generation!

Maybe he can get Judd Apatow to produce. Then they already have the new crew. Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill and Paul Rudd. And michael Cera taking on a Rick Moranis type role. Aykroyd should just leave it. They can make another Videogame, that was fun and made sense. But Ghostbusters 3.0? No thanks.

@ King of Spain - It was a quote from Aykroyd, so perhaps that's what he actually said and Total Film simply quoted him. And if you're going to be Grammar Nazi, at least try and not make a mistake in your own comments (there should be a comma between "Premise" and "TF).
