Now that the new year is in full swing (a week in the movie-verse is a long time), the studios are quickly grabbing release dates for their biggest franchises.
So the still-untitled follow-up to JJ Abrams’ Star Trek reboot has been pencilled in for 29 June, 2012, while Wolverine 2 looks set to start shooting in early 2011, with an implied 2012 release.
But what can we expect from these new adventures?
“I won't lie to you, I have been talking to writers. I'm a big fan of the Japanese saga in the comic book,” Hugh Jackman revealed back in May 2009, all but confirming that the second Wolvie flick will see the knife-knuckled one hot-footing it to Japan.
Meanwhile, the new Trek remains a mystery. In April 2009, Zachary Quinto said: “If they make more, we all signed on for three so if they want us to, we'll board the ship again.”
At the same time, Chris Pine confirmed that if he was invited back for a second Trek he’d “definitely be a part of it and we'll see what happens”.
No word yet on Abrams’ involvement, though. But with the release date pegged, the script is already being written by the first Trek’s team of Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof.
Prior to Star Trek’s release last year, Kurtzman told Variety: “With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We’ll be ambitious about what we’ll do.”
Expect more details shortly.
