Guardians Of The Galaxy has found its Drax The Destroyer, with former wrestler Dave Bautista signing on for James Gunn’s comic-book adaptation.
Drax is a human-born character who finds himself bestowed with awesome physical strength and the ability to produce energy blasts when he is reborn in a powerful new body.
Bautista, who was last seen strutting his stuff in The Man With The Iron Fists, has nabbed the role ahead of fierce competition from fellow muscle-man Jason Momoa, who many had considered to be the front-runner for the part.
The film will follow US pilot Peter Quill (AKA Star Lord), who finds himself caught up in an intergalactic conflict, and ends up on the run with a gang of futuristic ex-cons.
Bautista will join Chris Pratt’s Star Lord, with Rocket Raccoon, Groot and Gamora among the other members of the team yet to be cast. Directed by James Gunn, Guardians Of The Galaxy will open in the UK on 1 August 2014.

Damn I was hoping for Khal Drogo to land the gig. I was a big fan of Bautista when he was in the WWE but as an actor he's pretty bad.

Looks the part 100% but is a terrible actor. It didn't help that The Man With Iron Fists was fukin awful either. Suppose the guy deserves to be given a second chance of a film with a decent director and script.

Yeah, looking the part is fine and all, but he needs to bring the intensity of the character to bear and I don't think he's gonna be good for that. Then again I trust in the director, hopefully he can bring a good performance out of him, Hell he can only get better right? :-/

I am confused about this film. Some sites have this down as live action while others as an CGI animated feature (with mo-cap performances). Any of you have a clue? Oh, and about Bautista? Awful, awful news. Drax is quite a complex character and they need more than just a meathead to play him.

@CaptainCrazy, it's live-action, but two characters (Groot and Rocket) will be fully CGI creations voiced by actors (Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler are apparently still in the frame for the voice work) and I totally agree, Drax could easily become Marvel's Bane (ala Batman & Robin) with this casting, I just hope Gunn can work some magic and get a decent performance of him. The problem is, he's big, strong, green and if they play him as dumb, audiences will just see him as a Hulk-clone. He needs the complex characterisation to set him apart.

I'll give Batista a chance in the Riddick movie later this year.
