David Wenham joins Pope Joan

And John Goodman is back too…

German drama Pope Joan has been through the production ringer several times – shutting down due to legal issues and budget tussles and swapping its leading lady role from Franka Potente to Johanna Wokalek.

Now it looks like it’s gotten back on track a little, with director Soenke Wortmann gearing up to start shooting next month in Germany and Morocco. The director has even nabbed 300’s David Wenham and, in a surprising move, John Goodman has settled his legal dispute with producers Constantin Film and has returned to the movie.

The story follows the 9th-Century legend of a woman who disguises herself as a bloke to become, you’ve guessed it, Pope. Variety has its rosary beads out.

Hint: The film starred Michael J Fox as accidental time traveller Marty McFly.
