The trend for sequels, prequels and reboots seems to be spreading beyond the medium of cinema, with DC comics revealing the first official cover for Before Watchmen, a new strand of spin-off comics designed to fill in the gaps of the original Watchmen story.
“Essentially, we’re looking at old characters through new eyes,” creator Len Wein told Wired. “What we’re doing is filling in a lot of the blank spaces in a story that has already, to some degree, been told.”
“There were still a lot of gaps in the histories of Watchmen's characters,” he continues, “and events only mentioned in passing or touched on briefly in the original story. We’re filling in those gaps in the most creative and inventive ways we can.”
Wein will write the Ozymandias series (one of several character-specific mini-series to be released), the cover of which can be seen below. However, original creator and comic-book legend Alan Moore will not be involved at all, having turned down DC’s overtures to write the prequel series. Moore confirmed that the series had been offered back to him if he “would agree to some dopey prequels and sequels.”
What this new development means is that we will almost certainly be treated to a Watchmen prequel movie, with DC likely having factored a film adaptation into their plans to reboot the franchise.
The new comics are set to arrive this summer… we wouldn’t be surprised to hear talk of a new movie by Christmas!

Reminds me of that Simpsons episode where Millhouse asks Moore to sign his copy of 'Watchmen Babies', oh how we laughed because even Hollywood wouldn't be THAT desperate!

@alexr You've got three, they're called, respectively, Episodes IV, V and VI ;). RE the actual article: ...Pretty much what everyone else says. The interesting thing about those characters was, with the exception of Silk Spectre II and possibly Rorschach, there was very little backstory given. Why do this? :/

I reckon Alan Moore should turn up at DC offices dressed and strapped like Neo and pull a Matrix lobby scene on their asses

Baaaad idea. While I do enjoy the film more than the book (let the hate begin), who needs a prequel? Especially one without Moore's involvement.

@stevepotter no hate from me, although on balance i prefer the book i also love the film. Unlike many i prefer the films ending. I never understood the negative reaction to the changes, the end result is still the same just minus *SPOILERS AHOY* the giant squiddy alien thing, which i always thought was a bit dumb. I think that having people believe it was doc Manhattan which caused the devastation was much more poignant, their savior and protector now threatens them with annihilation. For me it worked. As far as Alan Moore is concerned, the guy in a genius (although one of his latest, 'Neonomicon' was atrocious) but lets face it he's also a bit of a dick. I don't think the prequels are all that necessary, but I'll happily read them.

Alan Moore's an a*****e. I really didn't care for the book's ending. It was foreshadowed, but in a ridiculously complicated fashion (which, in all fairness, was the point), while the movie's ending was a little more streamlined.

I prefer the ending of the Film, makes so much more sense than the ending of the book... Dr Manhattan becoming the scapegoat was, as badger says, a far better idea. I've gone off Moore since I had the misfortune to read 'the Lost Girls' as part of my uni course.
