Die Hard 5 has a new lead

Jai Courtney will play John McClane's son

Die Hard 5 has announced some big news today, with Spartacus: Blood And Sand actor Jai Courtney confirmed as the new star of the upcoming action sequel.

Don’t worry though, Bruce Willis hasn’t been condemned to the scrapheap just yet – he’ll be back on board as maverick cop John McClane, while Courtney will play his son, Jack.

Courtney reportedly beat out The Hunger Games’ Liam Hemsworth to play a character described by the official press release as, “an apple that has not fallen far from the tree.”

Indeed, the release goes on to claim that, “Jack may even be more of a hardass than his father.” You can see the pair together above, in an official image from the two actors’ screen-test together.

The film will see John and Jack relocated to Russia, with the McClane men looking to thwart some kind of global terrorist plot operating out of Moscow. Slightly glibly, the release describes out hero as a “true NYC fish out of water”. Hmmm.

Die Hard 5 will be directed by Max Payne’s John Moore, and will open under the somewhat cringeworthy title A Good Day To Die Hard on 14 February 2013. A lovely romantic number for Valentine’s Day then…

What do you think of the casting? Are you interested in a fifth Die Hard at all? Tell us, below.

Awesome news!? Is anyone else like me sick of the 'action hero's kids getting involved' plots? Die Hard 4.0 was bad enough with Mary Elizabeth Winstead being hard-as-nails, now we have the son. Jesus, we didn't need the kids for Die Hard 1, 2 & 3 so why now? If Bruce Willis as John McClane isn't enough to hold these movies on his own then stop making them! No doubt Die Hard 6 will feature John McClane's Navy Seal nephew and Kung Fu expert niece (who'll wear a nice black catsuit) as they take on the Taliban. Urgh.

The only reason I was looking forward to Die Hard 4.0 was because of Timothy Olyphant, but this is just going too far they should just stop now while they are still good

Its not Die Hard any more. The whole selling point of Die Hard was that it was the anti-Rambo, about a resourceful blue-collar cop who uses his wits and skills to outsmart the terrorists. That died when JM went up against jet fighter in Len 'not so' Wiseman's epic fail of a movie. Bring back McTiernan, he will show this young hacks how its done.

Terrible news, they will argue through the whole film then in a moment of "high octane action" Jai Courtney will shoot himself through the face with a bazooka shouting "yippy ki youngster" saving the his Dad, the Day, the World, the Girl? somehow survive and happy ending's... this will suck big fat stinky balls

It will probably be a PG-13, ie for ADD kids who would rather be raging on Call of Duty.

TheKingOfDalidab's comments are really quite worrying sometimes. Is this really one guy? How can anyone watch so much film and TV - doesn't he (it?) have a job?

@apo1978 Titter ye not, fine person. Even with a job, there is more than enough cumulative time in life to rack up hours of TV and movie watching. I myself have seen more TV and movie-dom than is probably healthy, but I still find time for work, a wife, a baby boy, a PS3, an Xbox, alcohol, food, sleep, and the odd w**k here and there... (too much?) I just choose to watch 'good' stuff, although admittedly, I do occasionally watch utter s**te...like CopOut!

This is awful news. This has nothing to do with Die Hard. Might as well make a totally different film starring the same actors.

McTiernan's movies were the best die hards hands down, when i think of diehard. the first 3 movies all gel together nicely. the fourth didnt feel or look like a die hard movie at all, god knows what the next one will be like :-S

Why must they insist on giving Willis a young sidekick, yes Bruce is old but Diehard is all about him !!!

I was born and bred in Sheffield, which makes me more than Yorkshire enough to say what I said Dalidab. No one's picking on you or bullying you (it's not ALL about you) we're just having a joke and a bit of a laugh and the idea of a Yorkshire-based Die Hard is hilarious to me! ... I can see it now, a member of Meadowhall's security staff gets left behind on Christmas Eve when the building is over-run. He goes on a one man battle to save the shopping lanes from a bunch of hoddies who listen to Beethoven and quote Julius Caesar (although one of them is slightly Gay, coz he likes One Direction) ... and he doesn't have a side-kick or a hate-filled offspring tagging along to help him out ... just a friendly local copper on the other end of his walkie-talkie ... who's from Hackenthorp and only the security guard can understand him ... I reckon it'd be reet good :-)

Dabs, I never said it was funny, nor genius ... just hilarious to me. And I didn't give you a second thought, it was the idea of Bruce Willis with a Yorkshire accent that struck me as funny. Learn to read between the lines and not take everything so literally and stop assuming it's all about you ... and you wouldn't last 5 mins in Meadowhall, I worked there for 10 years and the gangs of "yoofs" would have you for breakfast! :)

having Mary Elizabeth Winstead as his daughter, in Die Hard 4.0 (or the CRINGE-worthy title, Live Free or Die Hard), was okay. but now, having his son...doing action stuff alongside him maybe going a bit overboard. but, who knows...i didn't expect DH 4 to be a good flick, either. so, this one may pleasantly surprise me as well.

id rather see bruce willis in some high class HBO production playing some badass absolute c**t and acting his socks off - instead of playing this aging american eagle whos looking more and more a like a toy with each die hard film. Die Hard 6 ? - they'll just use his facial expressions ( all 3 of them ) on top of some CGI character who saves the world with the help of his hot scientist granddaughter

A very BAD idea, I reckon. Enough's enough. I KNOW that the movie business is just that - a business, but where's the art? Also, dalibab's home help must have the patience of a saint. Imagine dealing with that - in public; how long were they in Ann Summers before dalibab's stroking of the underwear will rubbing himself got them slung out? I'd say he should get out more, but staying indoors is probably the best thing for him.
