Disney confirms standalone Star Wars movies

“Derived from great Star Wars characters”

After yesterday’s rumour that Yoda might be receiving his own spin-off movie, Disney has today confirmed that several Star Wars standalone projects are indeed in the works.

The new films will deal with some of the characters who won’t be receiving as much screen-time in the new trilogy, with several spin-offs to be released over the same kind of timescale as the main series.

“I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films,” revealed Disney CEO, Bob Iger. “Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga.
“We still plan to make Star Wars 7, 8, and 9 roughly over a six-year period of time, starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period, too.”

Sounds like Yoda might be getting his own outing after all! In the meantime, Star Wars: Episode VII is slated to arrive in the UK in 2015.

What do you think of Disney's plans? Tell us, below!

The whole Yoda film thing was rumoured as an episode zero back when episode 3 came out. It was going to be 100 years before episode one and to be honest it sounded awful. Let's hope they finally flesh out Boba Fett. Everyone thinks he's a badass but apart from in the Extended Universe he's never really been that cool. I'd also like to see some of the Jedi like Kit Fisto, Plo Koon and Quinlan Vos get their own films.

I think this is getting a bit out-of-hand now. My love for Star Wars had aleady been diluted over the last decade - this will further add to such. Surely this'll be too much of a good thing? Its sad that the once great trilogy will be lost within its own franchise. I still can't believe I've not bought the bu ray box set, my force is not as strong as it once was. Too many cooks spoil the broth (hoth?).

the star wars universe is going to explode. i don't think it will become diluted in fact the opposite, much like star trek, the original creator let go of the reins and the first generation of star wars fans have become the film writers, technicians, designers etc, it has literally been inherited by the fans.

@dropdeadsam - Go to the Wookieepedia on Mandalorians and Boba Fett. He did tons. He was major. Looks like they need a Boba Fett movie to school people like you how integral the Mandalorians are in the Star Wars universe. To paraphrase from the Wookiepedia page, It's not all about Jedi and Sith as a double edged sword. It's a 3 bladed sword and the Mandalorians are the 3rd edge. Boba also taught Jaina Solo (Daughter of Leia and Han).

Thank Odin Lucas isn't in charge anymore. I don't like the sound of Star Wars Origins: Jar Jar.

The Trouble with Fett is that Lucas shattered any cool Fett had! the original he was a cold bounty hunter, Jango Fett....... do I need to say anymore! ruined Boba Fett for me! and the new voice! for me it was one of the worst things Lucas did to the original trilogy! and he did a lot wrong! So no a Fett movie wouldn't work!

Ok so the easy option would be what happened to Yoda after the collapse of the senate did he go planet hopping like Lou Ferrigno and Bill Bixby in the hulk TV series. I should think so.
