Eastern Promises is the big winner at Toronto

David Cronenberg pips Juno to the post…

As well as racking up some impressive earnings in its first weekend of release at the box office, David Cronenberg’s Russian mob thriller Eastern Promises has gone home with the top prize at the Toronto film festival.

Jason Reitman’s comedy Juno – a fest favourite – scooped the first runner-up position while Iraq documentary Body Of War was third.

First-time directors Israel Cardenas and Laura Amelia Guzman nabbed the Diesel Discovery award, which was handed out by the festivals press attendees (so you know they had good taste… ahem).

Hint: The film starred Michael J Fox as accidental time traveller Marty McFly.
