Ed Harris directing Appaloosa

A Western with Rene Zellweger and Viggo Mortensen

Ed Harris sports the sort of the leathery mug that would be perfect for a Western gun fighter, and now he’s getting Groundswell Productions to put their money where that mouth is.

Harris has nabbed Rene Zellweger and Viggo Mortensen to co-star with him in Appaloosa, a Western drama he co-wrote with Robert Knott and is planning to direct.

It’s adapted from Robert B. Parker’s novel, which finds two friends tasked with protecting a lawless town plagued by a renegade rancher. But their mission is thrown into chaos when a beautiful widow arrives.

This is only the second time Harris has been behind the camera – he’s previously megaphoned Pollock – and will start calling (and firing) the shots this October in New Mexico.
