First official images of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit arrive

Three brand new official images from the set of Peter Jackson’s epic

The first images of Martin Freeman playing Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit have landed online.

The pictures show Martin Freeman and Sir Ian McKellen, reprising his role as Gandalf, as well as a shot of director Peter Jackson and Freeman on set.

It's fair to say that in the movie world, The Hobbit and The Dark Knight Rises are battling for the title of most exciting movie in production. Could the LOTR prequel have clinched it with these latest images?

From the looks of things, Jackson is keeping the same look, tone and feel in The Hobbit as The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, and quite rightly so.

The film is shaping up to be another epic, and we can't wait for more images and production blogs from Jackson.

The Hobbit is currently filming in New Zealand and will be split into a 2-part saga. The first film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set for a December 2012 release.

"The Hobbit and The Dark Knight Rises are battling for the title of most exciting movie in production; could the LOTR prequel have clinched it with these latest images? " this is possibly the laziest, silliest way of generating user interaction I've ever seen. That said, it's worked. Balls.

Not a LOTR fan myself, but this cast is seriously tempting me, especially Freeman - he's just brilliant at every role he's played

Freeman's got that round, fat-faced look so I don't think there was ever any doubt that he'd look the part. Can't wait to see how Jackson will handle the 3D AND the new 48 fps technology he's been pioneering with these movies. It's gonna make Avatar look like your first car.

Of course there'll be extended dvd editions Dalidab, and I've made sure the wife has them booked as birthday presents!! I'll be able to sit in my comfy chair with a case of coke and an industrial sized bag of popcorn and watch close to 20 hours of Hobbit and LOTR magic!!

"From the looks of things, Jackson is keeping the same look, tone and feel in The Hobbit as The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, and quite rightly so. " No! This is exactly the opposite of the truth-- The Hobbit clearly has a very, VERY different tone to LOTR. Hitting the same notes again is exactly the WRONG way to do it....

@timkins, think about it... Hobbit is being made because ppl loved LOTR and want to see more of Tolkein's world brought to screen. Having established the tone and look of Middle Earth so well, PJ CAN'T make Hobbit as the children's story it originally was, to do so would ruin continuity and destroy the very well planned and set out world PJ created/interpreted. Besides, how many LOTR fans want to go see a kids movie, huh?
