First on-set image of new RoboCop suit

Joel Kinnaman gets his gear on

Jose Padilha’s RoboCop reboot has begun filming in Toronto, with the first on-set image of the titular lawman’s new suit making its way onto the internet.

Joel Kinnaman stars as former copper Alex Murphy, who finds himself posthumously transformed into a robotic peace-keeper by shadowy corporation, Omnicorp. And from the looks of this new image, he seems right at home in his new duds.

The new suit looks significantly different from the one used in the Paul Verhoeven original, opting for an all-black colour scheme rather than the traditional black and silver. It actually looks closer to the Batsuit, if we’re being totally honest.

Whether or not that’s a bad thing is up for debate, although at least Padilha and his team have got the confidence to try something different. However, we have a feeling the fans aren’t going to be as easily won over...

Co-starring Gary Oldman, Samuel L Jackson, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jay Baruchel and Jackie Earle Haley, RoboCop opens in the UK on 9 August 2013.

What do you think of the new suit? Tell us, below!

It looks like they just stole one of the costumes from Tron Legacy and turned the lights off. I'm not keen on it.

It looks like a cross between The Dark Knight suit and the suit Snake Eyes wore in GI Joe: Rise Of Cobra..... I think it looks like kevlar body armour....could this be a first try of OCP to make a cyborg based on their Police body armours? It's different and nothing like the classic RoboCop look. Just like the First X-men movie when everybody was wearing the leather outfits instead of the yellow spandex.... I wonder what Paul Verhoeven thinks of it....

Original costume - brilliant design. I loved the attention to detail from the moving parts on the back of his head to the little pneumatic system on his legs and the unique foot design. THIS COSTUME - Generocop. It looks like a hybrid of all the action figure-ready costumes designed over the last decade. I hope this is only Ver. 1 of the suit.

Dissapointed!! Very, dissapointed. I assumed they would make changes, but this is too much. Why is he black? Why not at least keep him silver/steel? I realize this looks more 2012, and that the old version would seem a bit slow and imobile for our time, but by the looks of new-Robo I allmost expect him to go all ninja-assassine on criminals. I don't want a robocop running around, jumping, kicking and being a 2012 superhero. Thats the impression I'm getting now. His brute force, slow walk and triggerhappy reflexes was what made him cool in the forst place. I hope they keep some of the original aspects. And also: Keep the oldschool, worn, buzy policestations. Keep the CSI-props clear of this movie. That was also cool: How they put this high-tech robot into a rather authentic police environment.

So, in trying to bring the armour up to date, they've just succeeded in making it look like something from the 90s instead of the 8os. He looks like a ninja turtle or a power rangers villain. Without the original armour, or at least something similar then it's not Robocop and shouldn't use the name.

Conjecture Time - I'm sure I read some where that Padhila is having a mare of a time with the studio getting them to do agree to any of his ideas. 'Parently it's a nightmare... and that was before the camera's even started to roll. I have also read reports on the script. 'Parently, in the film, the suits that build Robocop put the suits before focus groups and they deride the original design a being 'too 80s' so they come up with variations which is just a terrible 'in joke' idea that already you've p********f the entire fanbase. Also, they 'field test' Robocop by sending him to Afghanistan or something. That to me sounds more like a soldier's job, rather than a cops - i don't hive a f**k how robotic they are. All this before we even get to the suit design. Which looks like Batman/GI Joe crossed with Iron Man that's just been sprayed matte black. Absolutely terrible design and reeks of the current state of Hollywood affiars - designed by committee to resemble the nearest/most profitable films out there. Execs are so terrified of losing their jobs, they are forced to put everything on these s****y remakes/reboots and make them as bland and as safe as possible. When greenlighting a film like Inception, from the biggest mainstream director out there is considered 'a risk' because it's not a franchise or brand then you have to start worrying about the state of things. I could go on, but I won't. It's monday and I must save some rants for the week to come.

To be fair, if someone mentioned the word ROBOCOP to you, and you had no idea about the franchise, you'd probably end up with something blue, red and hideous with a flashing siren ontop of their head going nuts.

Do we know for definate the context of this shot, i.e, is this definatly the ifnal suit? could it also be just a future version of a standard policeman's uniform? (he seems to have no cover over his right hand) - I hope that it isn't the final Robo-suit. It just doesn't look very robotic. If you had a lone up of guys in costume and included the one above and the Verhoeven one and asked people to pick out the one that said 'Robotic Copper' to them, 95% would pick the 80's version. (the remaining 4% would be mental and 1% the people who couldn't be bothered paying attention to the question)

Might this simply be the thing he wears under a bulkier oversuit? hence the lack of right hand accesory. I dont overly care about what it looks like as long as they dont go down the 'nano-augment' route, which basically meant they are saving on wardrobe. I hope there are still some real elements in there-didnt Peter Weller study mime to get the movements looking the way they did?

It's too slick. It's a freakin robot that should induce respect and fear. It's not supposed to look like Batman's skateboarding gear.

Looks like Hollywood can't afford ti buy/rent the old suit from the museum, nor make a new one. In other words they are using parts from suits in recent movies. If they can't stick to the old suit from the original movies they should at least have the sense to make up something completely new. This suit is boring enough for me to not bother watching the movie.

If they had said this is the standard police suit I would have been excited. But this is Robocop? He looks like the Gimp in a Tarrentino film or a Kyle Minouge backing dancer!! If the original Robocop came after me Id be looking for a tank. If this came after me Id be looking for a stick!! After they finish this I hope they do another re-boot of it and do it properly

Actually to be fair, when you add that silver on it does look slightly better. Looks more like a modernised version of the original suit..........still think Weller's costume is way better though.
