First reaction: Toy Story 3

We see a pivotal scene from Pixar’s much-anticipated threequel…

Striding onto the stage at the Odeon cinema in Leicester Square, London, Disney/Pixar head honcho John Lasseter introduced a key scene from the 3D event movie of 2010: Toy Story 3.

“It’s not finished yet,” he warned, and the footage that followed was a mix of gorgeous tactile CG images and lovingly sketched storyboards, but Lasseter had every reason to puff up with pride.

Sad, funny, action-packed, the scene Lasseter chose to exhibit played out as follows:

About to head off to college, Andy must decide which, if any, of his toys will make the trip… and which will be shoved into a plastic trash bag and thrown in the attic.

He holds Woody in one hand, Buzz in the other, then looks between them and a cardboard box marked ‘college’.

Woody makes the cut; a distraught, disbelieving Buzz doesn’t. He is dropped into the bag along with the other toys.

And then… disaster! Andy is distracted before he can put the trash bag in the attic, leaving mum to discover it and, yes, put it out for collection.

The garbage truck duly pulls up and the bags are loaded, leaving Woody to chase after the metal monster as its jaws begin to clamp and crunch.

Will the toys escape?

Can’t tell you that one – the lights came on and Lasseter once more took to the stage once to raucous applause.

He then announced that Timothy Dalton has joined the cast as Mr Pricklepants, a hedgehog with thespian tendencies, and showed a short documentary he’d just ‘found’ of a preening Ken (voiced by Michael Keaton) being interviewed in his home.

On this evidence, Toy Story 3 will be worth the 11-year wait.

Cannot wait for this, I trust Pixar not to drop the ball as far as the quality is concerned.

Hmm, isn't that pretty much the same intro for Toy Story 2? With Woody about to be sold to the toy collector and Buzz trying to rescue him? Also, call me a party-pooper but who takes a toy to college?? I'm not sold on this yet, even though I dearly loved the first 2.
