First Secret of Kells promo poster

Artwork for Oscar nominee revealed...

Yesterday, the Oscar nominations didn’t contain too many big surprises (except for these, of course).

But there’s one we missed off that list. It’s a little film called The Secret of Kells, and it snuck its way into the Best Animated Feature category, despite most of us having never heard of it.

Well, here’s the film’s first official promo poster. Click below for a larger version.

Fresh from Ireland, Kell’s an old school effort that shoves dirt in the face of CG, 3D efforts with some beautifully rendered hand-drawn compositions.

It’s the story of Brendan, a young boy living in a medieval town that is being invaded by barbarians. The Irish voice cast includes Brendan Gleeson. Check out the trailer below...

No official UK release date, but it's out stateside in March. Will you see it?

This was out in selected cinemas in Ireland last year, incredible piece of work.

Hi Total Film. Just though you should know - this sentence makes no sense: "Fresh from France, Kell’s an old school effort that shoves dirt in the face of CG, 3D efforts with some beautifully rendered hand-drawn compositions." And Brendan Gleeson is Irish, not British.

And I beleive the animation was also done in Ireland .... it's not originally a french one dubbed in "British" voices. In fact I don't think there are too many British voices at all on it. Bit of reseach Josh!

THE SECRET OF KELLS is a stunning and original animated feature film that originated in, and was made by the animation studio Cartoon Saloon in Kilkenny, Ireland. It was co-produced by France and Belgium. The voice cast is Irish, it was then dubbed into French for the French version!

Secret of Kells was released on DVD early last year. It's c**p. It has a few nice moments but otherwise it's not good at all. I will now prepare for the Irish attack.

As I was saying in the TF tea room - what are these whiney Irish like? Seriously, shut up or we're not giving you the rest of your country back.

"Seriously, shut up or we're not giving you the rest of your country back." You Sir, are a troll. As for the wider issue, would TF be quicker to correct an inaccurate article if the inaccuracy about the race / creed of the person in question was Muslim, or African? Most probably. But hey, we're just the ignorant little sidekick to the Great British Empire right? I mean, we only gave the world James Joyce, Seamus Heaney, Liam Neeson, WB Yeats, Oscar Wilde, Dylan Moran, Jonathan Swift, Ernest Shackleton, Samuel Beckett, Bram Stoker, George Bernard Shaw and John Banville, to name a few. Yeah. How dare we get annoyed by the UK's patronising ignorance when it comes to our nation? I mean, we didn't even invent the concentration camp! Or deal in slavery for 300 years! What the hell do we know...

This looks like an absolutely gorgeous film but I am a bit taken aback at the efforts to exclude any mention of irish involvement at all in this article - it's an irish film, written & directed by irish people, made by a company in Kilkenny, starring irish actors and about a very irish subject.... You cannot possibly ignore the huge irish influence on this film
