First Trailer arrives for Mirror Mirror

Julia Roberts plays it for laughs

The first official trailer has landed for Tarsem Singh’s Mirror Mirror, and it already seems safe to say that it's an entirely different beast from Snow White And The Huntsman.

Whilst its K-Stew starring competitor has adopted a dark, brooding tone with heavy emphasis on bone-jarring action, Mirror Mirror seems determined to aim for the family market with a frantic volley of slapstick and one-liners.

Julia Roberts is in full-on panto dame mode as the wisecracking Queen, whilst Lily Collins is peppy and perky as Snow White. Armie Hammer plays the handsome prince, although he too is expected to join in with the comedic mugging, particularly when he gets a dose of “puppy love” potion.

Take a look at the trailer below…

Now, whilst we always knew this one was going to aim for a lighter tone than Snow White And The Huntsman, some of the jokes on display here don’t bode well for the end product. “Snow White?” exclaims one dwarf. “Snow who?” asks his pal. “Snow way!” quips another. Yes, this exchange of dialogue actually happens.

So if by “lighter” Singh was aiming for “extremely camp”, the trailer can be regarded as an unqualified success. It looks to us as if this one will be looking to score with the kiddie market before Snow White And The Huntsman pitches itself at those a little older. That said, the finished article might yet be a little less screwball than this breathless teaser would suggest, so we’ll have to wait and see.

Mirror Mirror opens in the US on 16 March 2012.

How does this one measure up to Snow White And The Huntsman? Which one will you be seeing? Let us know!

Personally, that has to be one of the worst trailers I have seen! You can almost smell the panic from the makers of the film when Huntsman's trailer came out last week and they have rushed this out. Roberts is hamming it up big style. It's not the sort of style I would expect from Singh either. It just doesn't feel right.

Bizarrely I have to agree with Dalidab- this film looks f*****g mental (and camper than Dalidab at a Little Chris concert), but looks like it has the potential to be surprisingly entertaining. Glad they're taking a different approach to the po-faced Huntsman version too.

Dalidab, you posted the other day that after seeing the trailer for this one (which you kindly supplied the link to), you said and I quote "it looks truly dreadful" what's with the sudden change of heart?

Chris I think Dalidab had only seen on set photos, not an actual trailer. Personally I think Singh is massively overrated- in terms of style over substance he makes Zack Snyder look like Scorsese. Knew the Immortals was going to be s**t from the first trailer but this looks like it might just be mental enough to work...

Ah.. makes sense, which is not a word I would use very often in regards to Dalidab. SIngh is a promo director (which he is great at) but as a movie director I just don't see it. I watched the Fall after all the praise it got and thought it was absolutely dire. I think I turned it off after an hour and a half because I just couldn't take it anymore. It's good to have visual film makers but it does seem to be the case that everything else suffers because of it. And yeah, Robert's accent was very confusing

I just watched the trailer again with the sound off and it looks a lot better :) Maybe I just never saw the Snow White story as a slap stick comedy? I prefer the darker style of Huntsman, more in keeping with the Grimm Bros style of story telling. Normally these type of competition movies don't happen as one drops out (unless it's a cartoon like Antz vs Bugs Life), but I think I will have to watch both to decide, which is music to the ears of the studios!
