The first trailer has arrived online for Gavin Hood’s adaptation of Ender’s Game, in which gruff old Harrison Ford introduces the audience to a futuristic world in which humanity is taking the fight to a race of marauding aliens.
Earth has taken a bit of a kicking you see, and in order to prevent it happening again, Ford’s military man is presiding over a Battle School designed to train the next wave of human kiddies into lethal killing machines.
One of said children is a boy named Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a scrappy little youngster who looks as though he might weigh three stone soaking wet, but is in possession of a brain of unrivalled tactical brilliance...

It’s difficult to glean too much from a trailer that takes such a by-the-numbers approach to the material (Earth in dire straits, gravelly motivational voiceover, unlikely young hero...), although given the quality of the cast involved (check out Ben Kingsley’s make-up!) we’re hopeful that this one might yet surprise us.
Directed by Hood and co-starring Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin and Viola Davis, Ender’s Game will open in the UK on 25 October 2013.
