First trailer for Gangster Squad: watch now

"Los Angeles is a damsel in distress"

Gangster Squad, Ruben Fleischer's period crime drama, had released a first official trailer, and even considering the efforts of Prometheus and The Dark Knight Rises, we'd have to say it's a contender for the coolest teaser of the year.

Sean Penn plays Mickey Cohen, an East Coast gangster who pitches up in LA with a view to expanding his empire. Unfortunately for him, Josh Brolin's ex-military man is back on the beat, with Police Chief Nick Nolte allocating him a special team known as the Gangster Squad.

Cue an ever-so-smooth cocktail of one liners and shotgun toting action as Brolin and his team (including Ryan Gosling, Anthony Mackie and Giovanni Ribisi) set about cleaning up the mean streets of LA.

Take a look at the new trailer below…

Pretty cool, no? We're particularly excited by what sounds like a pin-sharp script ("A cop that's not for sale is like a dog with rabies… you just gotta put 'em down."), more smouldering chemistry between Crazy Stupid Love co-stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, and Nolte and Brolin competing over who can look more stony-faced.

Gangster Squad opens in the UK on 9 November 2012, proving that there's life after the superhero summer after all…

Hmm not sure about the overly gruff voices and Penns makeup.. could be good though

That's got to be the most awful title for a film I've ever seen. Gangster Squad? It sounds like something from the guys who made Scary Movie. On the other hand, the trailer was good enough, and there aren't enough films about men galavanting around in hats these days. I'm in.

Been waiting for this trailer since the day I heard about this film and I can't wait for it. But the music seems a bit off for the time period, granted, that could have just been for the trailer... Looks awesome.

Kinda disappointing, I was expecting a noir type thriller not such an action orientated flick.
