Flight Of The Conchords movie could happen

So says Bret McKenzie...

Bret McKenzie, one half of comedy folk duo Flight Of The Conchords, has stated that efforts are being made to bring the band to the big screen.

Recently, McKenzie has been doing the rounds promoting The Muppets (having written several of the songs). When asked about an FOTC movie, he responded, "We're gonna try and do a movie. We just need a story."

So it's obviously very early days, but the success of The Muppets will no doubt give him a bit of extra clout when it comes to prepping the big screen crossover.

Flight… started out as a radio show before graduating to TV. After the success of the first series, the second came with much higher production values (but arguably less memorable songs).

Jemaine Clement, the other half of Flight Of The Conchords, seemed to take an early lead in the film race (Despicable Me, Dinner For Schmucks, Rio, and Men In Black III), though McKenzie's slow and steady approach (Muppets, The Hobbit) seems to be paying off in the quality vs quantity stakes.

The Muppets
is out in the US now, but, unbelievably, those of us based in the UK have to wait until 10 February 2012.

Do you want to see the Conchords touring multiplexes? Or should they be left on the small screen (and the wireless)? Let us know!

@CFG, u wanna see the big bang theory movie? already? would you not rather wait until the tv series stops first? Did they not make a red dwarf movie? it just jus cut into 3 parts for 'DAVE' tv, but that was their "movie" i think, as no-one else would fund it. And no, you don't have awesome taste in movies :-P lol

I'm very calm. You haven't got an IQ boost just because you've got a new name, you're the same person you always were- just because I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt doesn't mean I've suddenly started liking you or thinking any different of you. Back on subject though as you say.

@CFG i agree the back to earth of RD was really quite poor, but i think its because it was trying to have the same humour it had in the early 90s, and their brand of comedy really hasn't aged well. calling people "dog food face" etc doesnt cut it in this day and age. i also agree that series 7&8 were beyond dreadful. it would be nice if they made a new series but they would really have to bring into 2011 comedy wise, which i dont think they would as they have always stood by that styling of comedy, sadly.

Of course, one has to wonder if Big Bang Theory would even WORK as a movie. I doubt it could. It'd be like turning Community into a movie; some things are best left in a TV format.

@StevePotter- Agreed. I think a sitcom functions best as just what it is- a sitcom. Would anyone really want a Seinfield or Friends movie? Actually, I bet Modern Family would make a decent movie, just because the characters are developed past basic stereotypes. And back to Flight of the Conchords, I would love to see them make a movie.. I'm sure it'd be weird and awkward and filled with mumbling, but endearing and delightful all the same. :)

From what little I've seen of Modern Family, it could definitely work as a movie. Back to Community, it would be interesting (especially if we don't get a fourth season, knock on wood), but I'd rather have a season than a season's worth of story in two and a half hours. The Big Bang Theory, while funny, simply doesn't have enough to offer beyond the sitcom setting. Nothing wrong about that, the show's brilliant at what it does, but it doesn't seem to have potential.

Also, the Flight of the Conchords movie should be a musical.
