RoboCop, Jose Padilha's remake of the classic sci-fi action film, has added a genuine heavyweight to its cast with the announcement that Gary Oldman has signed on to play one of the leads.
Oldman will play Norton, the scientist responsible for creating RoboCop, who finds himself conflicted by the demands of his employers, and the struggle of a former human to rediscover his old self.
Oldman will be joining new RoboCop Joel Kinnaman (star of the US version of The Killing), who spoke recently about how adult a version of the story audiences will be treated to.
"I sincerely hope they’re going for an R rating, because I can’t imagine how RoboCop could be PG-13," he said. "That would be a huge mistake. If I have any say in it, I will fight very hard for it. It has to be violent."
Production has yet to begin on the film, but with RoboCop currently scheduled to open on 9 August 2013, expect some more casting announcements sooner rather than later...

@Otrain I concur completely. I thought this was going to be another pointless piece of sh*t but if it's good enough for Oldman its good enough for me!

Still would have liked a different lead and Aronofsky in the chair but you can’t have it all I suppose..... Oh I forgot about TDKR it's seems you can have it all!

This is a good addition. I have not seen the guy playing Robocop. Having an unknown is not a bad thing. I completely agree about the violence factor. I hope the CGI is not too heavily applied.

He’s not unknown, well maybe he is to you but he’s been in Safe House and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo among others but I know him best from The Killing and although he can act I cant see him playing Robocop but obviously you get surprised by actors performances all the time so I hope he proves me wrong.

@EddieFelson. I should have been more clear. I think it will be beneficial to have someone playing Robocop who is not an A-list star.

Sounds like they are doing something new with it at least.. the original is pretty flawless so it's still going to be a tough sell for me

I still think that this is a bad idea because Robocop does not need a remake in the very least and the studio should create a new hero for the current generation. Oldman's acting will greatly improve this film, but I still do not trust Hollywood to remake beloved things, especially now when they are being churned out like crazy. Oldman does not necessarily make for a good film. As we have seen from his lame Solomon Kane in Red Riding Hood. http://www.videodetective.com/movies/red-riding-hood/855429#.T76EruuWclc Sometimes with a star actor, the director feels he can just be lazy which results in a weak film. If Oldman is used to his full potential, this movie does have more of a shot.

As long as they try something new (which they probably will) and keep the R rating, I think this might be pretty good. The original RoboCop was awesome, but far from a perfect movie. I know this is sacrilegious, but it is possible that this movie could be better. Unlikely, yes, but stranger things have happened.

Robocop 3 was utter bullsh*t wasn’t it! Originals are great hopefully it will be a totally different kind of feel as if they try and recreate it, it will fail. Dredd/Robocop? I would much rather see an adaptation of Judgement on Gotham Dredd/Batman since the legend ends this year and guaranteed I will want more! Also I bought that GN about 20 years ago and still is one of the best now (if you like crossovers Lex Luthor Man of Steel is pretty interesting as well)

Norton? Surely it's (Bob) Morton that he's playing?
