George Lucas-produced WW2 movie Red Tails get a trailer

And there's plenty of aerial action…

Red Tails, the World War 2 drama produced by one Mr George Lucas, has revealed its first trailer.

The movie is based on the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American combat pilots to fight in WW2, despite facing prejudice and segregation.

It's a rare Lucasfilm movie that doesn't centre on Indiana Jones or the Star Wars universe, though it comes packing the impressive visual effects you'd expect from Industrial Light and Magic.

There's plenty of potential in the trailer, from a powerful story that lends itself to big-scale movie-making, to the scenes of aerial combat that could be among the biggest of their kind.

If the subject matter proves to be handled sensitively, this could be pretty special, and with a January 2012 release planned, it will be eligible for Oscar consideration.

The cast includes Terrence Howard, Bryan Cranston and Cuba Gooding Jr (who has experience of this kind of thing with Men Of Honour).

Director Anthony Hemingway is making his feature debut on the project, having helmed episodes of high-profile TV shows including The Wire, CSI: NY and Battlestar Galactica.

Check out the trailer now:

Red Tails is set to be released in early 2012.

Trailer's a winner, lots of jingoistic goose bump inducing statements of courage, ILM's effects are second to none, but George Lucas AND Cuba Gooding Jr involved in the same project? I predict syrup, cliché and a script with zero subtlety , but plenty of machine guns and explosions. Lest we forget 'Pearl Harbour' has a spine tingling trailer set to Hans Zimmer's 'Thin Red Line' score and that was a pile of s**t, so was 'Men of Honour' actually....

Cuba Gooding JR will also have experience of this kind of thing from starring in a movie about the same story called The Tuskegee Airmen back in 1995 with Laurence Fishburne, Mekhi Phifer and John Lithgow ;-)

Hmm, it could be a great movie, but I just can't trust anything Lucas touches anymore. The aerial scenes look over the top and unrealistic. But I do see alot of good actors in there, perhaps this is the movie that brings Cuba Gooding back from exile. If only Speilberg were directing.

Star Wars had spaceships manoeuvring as if they were aircraft. This film has aircraft manoeuvring as if they were Star Wars spaceships! I've seen real Spitfires, Mustangs and ME109s flying for all they're worth. These CGI aircraft would turn the pilot to jelly at the same time as breaking the aircraft in half! If that's the trailer, how bad will the real film be?
