Guillermo del Toro describes Hellboy 3 as “very unlikely”

Outlines the potential stumbling blocks

There’s been a lot of chatter of late surrounding the likelihood or otherwise of a third Hellboy movie, but according to Guillermo del Toro, the chances of the film ever seeing the light of day remain slim.

“It’s very unlikely it’ll happen because you need things to converge so strongly,” said del Toro in an interview with Collider, before listing all the various boxes that need ticking. “Larry Gordon, Universal, the rights, Ron [Perlman’s] and my availability, Mike [Mignola’s] blessing…”

“We have pieces of that, but we don’t have all of that. You need so many things to confluence and then you need about $150 million.”

He also says that completing his story via a new comic-book would also be problematic, as character creator Mignola has always wanted to keep the two mediums separate.

“I talked to Mike about making it a comic,” says del Toro, “and Mike said very clearly, ‘Hellboy the movies is yours, Hellboy the comics is mine; I don’t wanna confuse them.’”

“He has been very clear about not bringing any mythology we did in the movies into the comics… Mike is very careful [about that].”

Sounds like we might’ve seen the last of del Toro’s vision of the big red badass then. At least for now, anyway…

DEL TOROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! *Shakes fist with impotent rage.* Although, maybe this won't be too bad. I heard talk of a "Slaughterhouse Five" adaptation with Charlie Kaufman, so... maybe we're in for a treat.

I've litterally only just watched the first two and whilst I wasn't blown away I did wander if there was to be a sequel just because of some of the dialogue in the film. It sucks we wont get to see an end to the story but the films were never incredible so it's no great loss.

It would be possible if GDT didn't insist on scheduling project after project. Perhaps GDT could exec produce and hand the reigns over to someone else?

Such a shame this won't close out to a trilogy. Then again, most number 3's are utter sh*t so maybe it's a good thing.
