Hayley Atwell will cameo in Captain America 2

According to Stanley Tucci, anyway…

Despite initial reports that she would not be returning for a second outing, it sounds as though Hayley Atwell will be filming a cameo role for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

That's according to Stanley Tucci, who appeared with Atwell in the first film, and who spilled the beans when being asked whether he himself would be returning.

"No, they haven’t [asked], unfortunately," revealed Tucci. "I’m really sad. I know that Hayley is going back to do a flashback scene, but I have not been asked."

Seeing as the majority of the film will take place in the present day that Cap found himself transported to at the end of the first film, a flashback appearance would make sense. in Atwell's absence, Emily VanCamp has been cast as the female lead, potentially as Peggy Carter's niece, Sharon.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, and co-starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will open in the UK on 4 April 2014.

It would be lovely if there were a scene in the new Captain America film where he finds out where Peggy lives in the present day and sees that she is now married and has had children of her own and grandchildren. It would be quite an emotional scene as Steve will realise how much time has gone past and that the woman he loved moved on and found someone else. They did this in The Ultimates and found it one of the many parts of the graphic novel that stood out to me.

Apparently they shot a lot of stuff like that with Cap for The Avengers, where Steve visited some old haunts and even went to see an older Peggy. However they dropped it all as it slowed down the main story, but I think it will work better in Cap's sequel anyway, add some gravitas to his character and the storyline. And even though it may only be a cameo, it will be nice to see Atwell again, she's lovely :)

@moviemind91, totally agree on the Ultimates front, some of the best stories Marvel have produced over the last decade have been in the Ultimate line of comics and of course they are the inspiration for the current Marvel Movie Universe, so I reckon we'll see a few influences from those stories in upcoming films.

trist808 you are correct. On the deleted scenes on The Avengers, Steve is in a comfortable room in a New York apartment looking through old files of his Howling Commando friends that all read "deceased" with the exception of Peggy. He looks at the phone number and address and mulls over the decision to call her, which he doesn't. He then goes outside sees the street in all its 2012 grandeur, he then stops at a diner and sketches the outside of the same Grand Central Station he will later defend alongside the Stark Tower. A pretty waitress says hello, the same one who will eventually appear before on TV thanking him for saving her life in the end of the film. He then goes to the old boxing gym where Nick will eventually find him.

A lot of insightful fan boy chatter on the history of Captain America, and what could happen next. I just like Atwells big knockers :)
