Hayley Atwell won’t return for Captain America 2

Production still looking for female lead

Hayley Atwell has been rather coy over whether she will be returning as Peggy Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but a recent interview with Time Out confirms that she will not.

Instead, the production is still thought to be searching for its female lead, with Peggy’s younger sister Sharon Carter thought to be a likely replacement for Atwell’s character.

No casting has been confirmed as yet, but Anna Kendrick, Felicity Jones, Allison Brie and Mary Elizabeth Winstead have all been linked with a role in the film.

The sequel will find Steve Rodgers struggling to adjust to life in modern-day America, while also pitched into battle with his old pal Bucky Barnes, now reinvented as a brainwashed Russian assassin.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and co-starring Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will open in the UK on 4 April 2014.

Who would you like to see as the film's female lead? Tell us, below!

Sharon Carter was Peggy's niece not her sister. Since Peggy was around in WW2 and Sharon in modern times, if they were sisters that would have made their mother's womb rather miraculous.

Plus, well done on spoiling one of the best revelations in modern comic book history! Why don't you just give the entire outline of Winter Soldier's plot to non-comic book fans so there's no surprise whatsoever when they see the film!!! FFS!

Pity, Hayley Atwell is not only gorgeous but she's a good actress, she deserves a big franchise like Captain America. I kinda want Emeilia Clarke to land the role as her neice, basically because I love Game Of Thrones !

Aww, poor Cap'n. I was kinda (somehow) hoping he'd be reunited with his love interest, eventhough he's out-of-time. I also wanted to see more of Hayley's "Atwells". Well is where they're at! I'm not even sure what I'm saying anymore....

trist808 Well said, what a massive (and unnecessary) spoiler! I guess that just suggests flashbacks won't be a major part of the story?

Well this is good news, yes she's a good actress, yes she's absolutely gorgeous but she'd ruin the film. Well she wouldn't but her character would. The film is Rodgers trying to adjust to modern life which also includes coming to terms with everything he knew being gone i.e the woman he loved is dead. If done properly that could add a lot of depth to the character. Let's just hope the director wants substance over style. @trist808, read the official summary of the film on any website (IMDB or Wikipedia will suffice) they all have the 'spoiler' in them. The only people who don't know that about the story are the people who know nothing about Captain America as a whole, I'm guessing those people don't come on websites like this one.

@FBJRider ... it would seem you are right, the synopsis on several sites do indeed have that info. It's a shame, had they kept it under wraps it would have made a great reveal (just like it did in the comics), readers assumed Winter Soldier was just another Russian flunky sent to take Cap down, but when his identity was revealed it shattered Steve's world ... I just wish they'd left it until the third film and maybe played down who Winter Soldier is. Nowadays, everything about a film is revealed before even a frame is shot, let alone the film playing in cinemas, no doubt the trailer will lead with that as well I guess.

Even if the official synopsis didn't mention Bucky being the Winter Soldier, all it would talk is a Google search on the character of Winter Soldier and all would've been revealed anyway. If it's already happened in the comics, it's really hard to consider something a spoiler. I mean, if someone was to reveal that in a sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man, Norman Osborne becomes Green Goblin, I doubt anyone would consider it a spoiler.
