Hellboy creator says there won’t be a third film

Mike Mignola dismisses claims of a threequel

Despite an army of baying fans just waiting to see their grizzled red antihero on the big screen once more, it sounds as though there are no immediate plans to bring Hellboy 3 into being.

That’s according to character creator and comic-book artist Mike Mignola, who also shared a co-executive producer credit on the first two movies.

Speaking to Comic Book Resources about the latest series of the comics, Mignola said, “The biggest problem I see as far as PR for the next billion years is explaining endlessly not only that there’s no Hellboy 3 movie, but it’s going to be explaining ‘It’s a series, but it’s not a monthly series.’”

That would seem to sound fairly official, despite the fact that we previously heard that Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman were still interested in wrapping up the epic story.

But, given that del Toro’s slate is already jam-packed for the coming 18 months or so, Mignola's claim that there won't be a third movie seems difficult to dispute.

Yeah, but he also says the Stars Wars prequels superior to the originals and that Coke Zero tastes better than regular coke, so don't believe a thing he says

On a serious note though, as much as i loved the first two, i don't think i'd be that bothered if i never saw a third. I'd welcome one, gladly, but if i made a list of films i absolutely wanted to be made, this wouldn't be up there.

awww c'mon, they've got to finish the story! that whole scene in Hellboy 2 with the angel of death thingy was so tantalising. So many sequels get made without a need storywise, it would be a real waste not to complete this one. We live in a world with more Highlander sequels than i can be bothered to count, Fast and Furious sequels than i can be bothered to watch , and Scary movie sequels that, no matter how much they jump up and down at the sides of the screen, i can't be bothered to insult! make Hellboy 3 already!

Well, Hollywood doesn't really have a habit of giving the fans what they actually want, why start now?

Could it be time for an official Movie Geek union, or militia even?

Don't despair, give it 5 years.

Yeah, I agree with @Hadouken76, give it a couple more years and when all these projects Del Toro has on the go fall through (and at least 90% of them will) he'll push this forward and we'll get a third installment. You've got the star and the director willing to do it, so all respect to Mignola but it could happen without him anyway.

In five years time Ron Perlman will be 67 years old.
