Yesterday’s Writers Guild Awards saw something of an upset, with Spike Jonze’s Her beating hot favourite American Hustle to the gong for Best Original Screenplay.
The Joaquin Phoenix-starring film looks to be picking up some serious momentum heading into the Oscars, and has become many punters’ favourite ahead of the likes of Blue Jasmine and Nebraska.
Meanwhile, Billy Ray’s script for Captain Phillips was awarded Best Adapted Screenplay, beating out strong competition from The Wolf Of Wall Street.
Whether or not that turns out to be such a strong Academy indicator remains to be seen, particularly given that 12 Years A Slave, the big Oscar favourite, was not eligible for the awards.
Sarah Polley also took home the award for Best Documentary Screenplay for her work on Stories We Tell.
