Hugh Jackman joins Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie

In line for a supporting role

Neill Blomkamp’s next sci-fi adventure, Chappie, has added some A-list talent to its ensemble, with Hugh Jackman confirming that he has signed on to join the cast.

“I am doing a role in Neill’s new film, called Chappie, which we shoot in Johannesburg,” reveals Jackman. “I’m there for a couple of weeks at the beginning of next year.”

The film will follow the story of a robot with advanced artificial intelligence, who is stolen by a group of gangsters with plans to use him for their own dastardly purposes.

Regular Blomkamp collaborator Sharlto Copley will voice the robot, with Dev Patel also having been linked to the cast. Given Jackman’s comments about only being present for a few weeks, we’d assume he’ll be taking a supporting role.

Directed by Blomkamp, and co-starring Brandon Auret and Jose Pablo Cantillo, Chappie will open in the US on 27 March 2015, with a UK release date to be confirmed.

Is Jackman a good addition to the cast? Tell us, below!

Both as a South African and as a fan of Blomkamp and Copley's work, I am very excited about this project! (Not to mention my childish infatuation with robots in movies.)

Really enjoyed District 9 and Elysium - think the visual style he has is great (the machines, ships and droids in Elysium looked real and not like CGI) . Think this sounds like another interesting project.

I am not keen on the premise of Chappie.

@illkillyoulast: I would kill to see Neill Blomkamp's take on Short Circuit 2, so no complaints from me.
