Independence Day 2 gets an official release date

Sequel will land on 3 July 2015

Independence Day 2 appears to be steadily moving forward, with Fox announcing that the sequel will hit US cinemas on 3 July 2015.

The film is thought to be one of two Independence Day sequels entering production, with Roland Emmerich having recently spoken about viewing the next film as the first in a new franchise.

According to Emmerich, Independence Day 2 will take place some 20 years after the events of the original film, with the aliens making their way back to Earth for another crack at hostile takeover.

While Will Smith is not expected to return, Bill Pullman has already confirmed his involvement, with Emmerich having explained that the new film will feature of mixture of characters old and new.

"It’s still some of the same characters, but also new younger characters," said Emmerich, who has co-written the script with Dean Devlin. "It’s a little bit like the sons take over."

Whether or not Emmerich will return to direct remains to be seen, but given that the new film will likely contain a whole host of city-wide destruction, we can think of nobody better-suited to the task...

Good thing Pullman is involved. Sink or swim, this film doesn't need Smith, but I'm hoping they can at least get Goldblum back too.

Goldblum is working for the aliens in the sequel and has mutated into a fly and makes sure their computers are free of viruses.

So are we to believe that aliens from another planet would have another crack at earth (rather than moving on) 20 years later.... coincidentally around the time of Independence Day in America?

Im with DeckRickard, keep Jaden Smith away... from any film. He could ruin anything mugging it up the way he does

Why does it have to be 'sons' ??? Why can't it just be generic characters who are younger than the original cast ?

The aliens have swapped out all of the USB ports from their main control ship and replaced them with a new 'Lightning' connector.. There is no way the pesky humans can beat them this time....

@mattburgess: I somewhat optimistically assumed that he used the word "sons" figuratively.

The 20 years later is because the original ship sent a distress call before it was destroyed and it's taken that long for backup to arrive, being thousands of light years away. They never expected Earth to win. I think this will open up the alien mythology a bit more. With giant f off spaceships.

@Chibik, good point - i think 'sons' is used generally by americans in that way, although there were those two kids (pullman's and Smith's) from the first one who would be grown up now. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with this. For all the sci-fi and big budget special effects films over the years, we haven't had a film about mankind militarising space as such (apart from the Trek stuff) so it would be good to have something with the military of earth having used the alien tech to create spaceships of our own.

Awww, don't be so dismissive @Ali1748, I hear the entire supporting cast will all be natural red-heads :)
