Iron Man writers to pen the Tomb Raider reboot

Want to make Lara the new Ellen Ripley

tomb raider

Iron Man screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Otsby have signed on to pen the Tomb Raider reboot.

And they have ambition. Clearly setting out to give Lara Croft back what little credibility she may have once had, they want to turn her into a bona fide screen heroine to do Ellen Ripley proud.

“We aim to write an origin story for Lara Croft,” they tell Variety, “that solidifies her place alongside Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor in the pantheon of great female action heroes.”

That’ll be quite a challenge considering Croft’s better known as a voluptuous babe whose curvy video game figure simply cannot exist in nature (though Angelina Jolie came damn close).

Still, the fact that Fergus and Otsby have such lofty ambitions can only be a good thing. We just hope they can fully deliver on their promise of a kick-ass new action heroine.

Ambitious? Or stupid? Think Lara can ever stand alongside Ripley and Connor as an awesome action heroine? Drop us your comments below...

Thing is, Lara Croft has the POTENTIAL to be a great character. If someone approaches it with some intelligence it could work. Just don't give it to Paul WS bloody Anderson to direct.

I don't see the problem with Angelina reprising the role - she's still young enough and can deliver good action as well as a convincing English accent.

Comparing a computerised blow-up doll to RIpley or Connor is a bit much...those women were driven by a survival instinct because they didnt have stupid acrobatics to fall back on...leave Croft where she belongs, in 1996.

Rebecca Hall's too old, as I think is Angelina. If you had the origins story, ie the teenage Lara Croft surviving a traumatic plane crash and having the first big adventure... why not get Emma Watson into the gym, get her to grow her hair and have an attractive, intelligent, genuinely English girl playing the role? Ooh leftfield casting...

How can 27 be too old ??????? Emma Watson would be an atrocious choice.

Summer Glau! I may be something of a devotee of her charms, but she has the presence and physicality for the role, although her ability to throw out an 'English' accent in an episode of 'Firefly' was rubbish. Failing that Megan Fox, hot pants, two guns, shooting tigers, SOLD!

lara croft is THE ONLY heroine for me! she's bolshy, courageous and in your face . the only subtlety about her is her english accent! i think rachel weisz would be great for the part!
