J.J. Abrams involved with Half-Life adaptation?

Or is he working on a Portal movie?

Clearly somebody close to J.J. Abrams has been reading our recent videogames feature, because the director has been strongly linked to a potential adaptation of either Portal or Half-Life.

Abrams was appearing as a keynote speaker at the 2013 DICE summit, and revealed that, “there’s an idea we have for a game that we’d like to work with Valve on.”

An exciting enough prospects on its own merits, but even more encouragingly, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell then went on to say, “We’re super excited about that and we also want to talk about making movies, either a Portal movie or a Half-Life movie.”

The two properties are two of the studio’s most popular sci-fi games, the former focusing upon the fiendish challenges of a malicious artificial intelligence, while the latter is an all-action blaster set around a research facility that accidentally opens a gateway to another world.

Were Abrams to officially come on board for either project, we’d be dancing our way into geek nirvana. Let’s hope there’s more to this one than hot-air and back-slapping…

Which property would you most like to see Abrams adapt? Tell us, below!

I love Portal and Half-Life. They are among my all time favourite games and have very very fond memories. I'd love to see an adaptation hit the big screen. However, the Half-Life universe has been around a long time, and has a very well established and loved core 'canon'. Although I think JJ is a very talented director and could pull this off easily, he isn't shy of changing things to suit his script. Which is fine when you have a massive amount of material to fall back on, like Trek. But Half-Life is ALL about what is in the core. You take out, or change any of the core creatures or characters and it stops being Half-Life. And if they have Gordon, or Chell, talking... then that is going to p-off an immense part of the fan base... Which they will cos no studio is going to pay for a lead that doesn't speak a line. Sorry about the ramble, I'm not sure how to express what I mean.
