James Cameron has been doing plenty of talking concerning the Avatar sequels of late, and his most recent soundbite concerns his desire to avoid the pitfalls experienced by fellow sci-fi sequel, The Matrix Reloaded.
Cameron’s main concern is that the story arc should come to a definitive close at the end of parts two and three, with the audience left with a satisfying conclusion for each movie, rather than a ton of unanswered questions.
“It’s a little bit of a daunting writing task because it’s two scripts and they’ve both gotta be done at the same time,” says Cameron. “I’m writing it as separate stories that have an overall arc inclusive of the first film.”
“I don’t want to suffer from the Matrix 2 problem, where it just ends, like, what the hell? It’s gotta end. There’s gotta be a sense of conclusion, but also a sense that the journey will continue, and that’s a fine line.”
Cameron expects that pre-production will begin on the sequels in January, with Avatar 2 faintly pencilled in for a 2015 release date. Those little blue men aren’t about to disappear any time soon...

Well, he wasn't exactly on a par with Matrix 1, with Avatar, was he?

You just know he is going to crowbar Arnie somewhere in that trilogy. Maybe as a frustrated general or a talking tree or some sh*t.

Maybe just reignite Edward Furlong. Still, at least he's aware of the waffle psychological BS blackhole that the Matrix fell into once its novelty wore off, maybe he can avoid it with Avatar 2/3/4

I've nothing against Avatar; it's fun in places, but take away the amazing effects, and you have Dances With Wolves, with average to s**te acting.

I wasn't aware that there were enough fans of The Matrix sequels to be offended by Cameron's perfectly sensible comments. Avatar might not have been up there with the first movie in the Wachowski's franchise, but it was about a million times less awful than those sequels. They set the template for the modern 'cerebral' blockbuster trend of everyone sitting around explaining everything to each other at great length to let critics know that the filmmakers were supposedly clever, rather than trusting the audience to pick up on the subtextural meanings themselves. Or, more concisely, Matrix 2 & 3 are s**t. He's right to aim higher.

The Matrix Reloaded wasn't that bad, take out the Architect and stupid dance rave/sex scene and it's a decent action movie.

Remove all the dialogue as well while your at it, Ali. Then it might be a decent movie (with a rubbery CG Keanu in the fight scenes).

I'm up for it, no doubt. For me, his comments about the Matrix sequels are fair, but he needs concentrate on topping his first Avatar and not making the same lame choices. Maybe come up with better lingo than Unobtanium. Maybe put Sam Worthington through acting class first.
