Jamie Foxx lands Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained

He'll play the freed renegade slave

jamie foxx

Jamie Foxx has landed the lead role in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained.

Being touted as a ‘Southern’, Unchained will reportedly play with western movie tropes and relocate them to the Deep South.

Foxx will play a freed slave who attempts to save his lover from a malicious plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio).

He’s aided in that quest by a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz).

Previously, Tarantino offered the slave role to Will Smith, who graciously turned it down. After meeting with Idris Elba, Terrence Howard and Chris Tucker, Tarantino finally settled on Foxx.

Though it's disappointing that neither Smith nor Elba will get to tackle the role, Foxx is a fine replacement.

Django Unchained opens 25 December 2012.

Think Foxx can do the role justice? Or was your heart set on Smith? Speak up below...

It's a shame Smith didn't do it, purely because DiCaprio v Smith would have been G. Foxx is a superb actor, and every time I see one of his movies I keep hoping he'll star in something better. This is it

Very pleased that he did not go with Smith who's decent at best. Foxx is an excellent choice as he's been terrific in Collateral, Miami Vice & Ray. And is it actually confirmed that DiCaprio has been "officially" cast?

Thank god it's not Smith.....would have been s**t! last time he played a cowboy we ended up watching Wild Wild West... Too bad it isn't Elba...but Foxx is a good choice.... Still....Denzel could be great, but he's too old for it. Hey...luckily Tarantino didn't offer it to Martin Lawrence....

I would have liked to see Idris Elba in the role, but Jamie Foxx is also a really good choice and I'm sure he'll do a great job!

Hopefully Django will see Foxx return to his Ray, Any Given Sunday and Collateral performances.

Maybe, but he's a better actor than Smith... and I hope they never find the corpse of whoever suggested Chris Tucker for consideration.

Fox is the perfect choice, no doubt. He's brilliant! Can anyone confirm or deny Denise Milfort playing Broomhilda? Credible sources only please.
