Jane Russell, the star of classic movies Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and The Outlaw, has died aged 89.

The actress rose to fame in the early 1940s with Howard Hughes’ Western The Outlaw, and went on to appear in critically acclaimed movies The Paleface, His Kind Of Woman and Macao.

But she quit acting at the end of the '60s and only made a handful of appearances after that.

“Why did I quit movies?” mused Russell in 1999. “Because I was getting too old! You couldn’t go on acting in those years if you were an actress over 30.”

Russell died of respiratory failure in her Santa Maria home.
