Javier Bardem offered gunslinger role in Dark Tower

Could play Roland Deschain

Ah, the wonders of an Oscar nomination. Hot on the heels of Javier Bardem’s Best Actor nod at this year’s Oscars, Universal have just offered the actor the lead role in their grandiose adaptation of The Dark Tower.

Previously, Bardem was reportedly favourite alongside Viggo Mortensen and Christian Bale. Could that nom for Biutiful have been the clincher? It certainly can’t have hurt.

With director Ron Howard at the helm, The Dark Tower is an ambitious adaptation of Stephen King’s epic book saga, which will comprise of three films and a two-season TV series to plug up the gaps between cinema releases.

Bardem will play (if he accepts his mission) Roland Deschain, a gunslinger who’s on a quest to find the Dark Tower, which is said to be the universe’s nexus.

"I think there's something about Green Mile or a Shawshank Redemption, the complexity and the ballast of them,” Howard has said.

“Those are two [King adaptations] where you do get the horror and suspense that's there on the page."

Is Bardem the right gunslinger for the role? Can Howard pull off such an epic undertaking? Speak up below...

Although Mr Bardem is brilliant at portraying menace, my image of Roland was more of a wiry individual with black hair and piercing blues eyes. I think Stephen Moyer who played Bill Compton in True Blood would be the man to play Roland!! Yes Mr Deschain is an amalgamation of every cowboy hero (and anti-hero) who appeared in the better films of the Western genre, I think that the main protagonist in Mr Stephen Kings imagination was not the obvious choice of Clint Eastwood but perhaps the look of Henry Fonda in the spaghetti western "Once upon a time in the West". This of course is only what I would like to think.

My housemate is an avid reader of these books and she's adamant that they cannot make this project as brilliantly as it is written. Personally Viggo works, or perhaps get James Marsters to darken his hair, his eyes are incredible. I do not read, so I would genuinely like to see this movie made, so I can follow what my housemate raves about.
