Jeff Goldblum to return for Independence Day 2

Roland Emmerich confirms he will be appearing

Roland Emmerich continues to drip-feed information about the forthcoming Independence Day 2, confirming that Jeff Goldblum will return for the long-awaited sequel.

During a Q&A with Movies.com, the director and screenwriter revealed that Goldblum would be reprising his role as jittery computer hot-shot, David Levinson, alongside fellow returnee Bill Pullman.

Presumably Pullman’s President Whitmore is no longer in office, with the film being set some 17 years after the original, so it will be interesting to see how his character fits into proceedings.

Meanwhile, Emmerich reiterated that Will Smith would be unlikely to star (largely on account of his paycheque), but that he is still hoping to persuade him to pop up in a cameo capacity.

Emmerich has still to confirm for certain whether the film will be his next directing gig, but what we do know is that the film will land in US cinemas on 3 July 2015, with a UK date to be confirmed.

Are you excited for Independence Day 2? Tell us, below!

Nearly 17 years ago, I feel so old. Will Smith can't make it because he is buried after his career implosion, Tarantino offered a lifeline but Smith wanted a bigger rope and his son Jaden to do all the pulling. Anyway this sequel is a pointless exercise, since the original was built around the awesome trailer, and nothing they do will ever match that level of jaw-dropping special effects. It will be crappe CGI all the way.

f**k sake - Independence was ONE OF THE f*****g WORST FILMS EVER MADE!! To anyone with an IQ higher than 6 it was just an insult. Will Smith headbutting an alien - really? Will Smith figures out (with no difficulty) how to fly their ships? And despite being such an advanced alien race, their moon sized mother ship and fifteen mile wide saucers......were built by Steve Jobs as they use Apple technology so Jeff can upload a virus???They must have the same USB connections too. Then there were all those speeches that made me leave the cinema to throw up. Why, why, why does this clown keep getting massive budgets to make s**t films? And why, why, why do you Total Film keep giving him rave reviews? Fifty quid says...when this bloated piece of s**t turkey comes out you give it at least 4 stars (and use the cash they gave you for said 4 stars to pay for a big Christmas party - can I come?)

Lol think spids still p****d he was too young to see the original at cinema so had to wait for DVD.... Sorry VHS haha just Kiddin mate! I'm well up for this sequel n loved the first, a tad sad smith isn't game but once again proves he's over time turned into a gargantuan jockey of nobs!!! Soooo cool goldblum n Pullman back in action n CGI is gonna be incredible, has to be really as the effects were great back then but now they have to keep up with all the CGI competition. Reason emmerich keeps getting these disaster movies is that he does manage to make the dollars roll in with every movie he makes n his films are kinda a guilty pleasure of mine......... Sequels been too long in pipeline though...... I'm hoping everyone will still be interested on its release!

@Spid2411 - A few things from your comments ---- 1) "Will Smith headbutting an alien - really?" - Not really; he punched an alien that had crashed, an alien that, if you had bothered to listen to the film, has similar tolerances to heat, pain, impacts, etc as humans (thus Will Smith could punch it out cold). 2) "Will Smith figures out (with no difficulty) how to fly their ships?" - He is a fighter pilot with the US military and the controls appears to be easy enough to work out. Also, it's possible human technology was reverse-engineered from the crashed ship, so could have similar control methods. 3) "And despite being such an advanced alien race, their moon sized mother ship and fifteen mile wide saucers......were built by Steve Jobs as they use Apple technology so Jeff can upload a virus???They must have the same USB connections too." - Again, as it's possible that human technology was reverse-engineered from the alien tech, it's easily feasible that they are compatible. Not to mention that it was the aliens who linked in with our technology first ("... using our satellites against us").

@DravenCage.... Huh, I had never thought of the reverse engineered thing before. It gives the whole thing a new perspective for me. While those points never made my head implode as they did for Spid, they did grate a little at the time. I'll watch it in a new light next time. Glad Jeff is in for round 2.

I never got what was so unrealistic about David uploading a virus like that, given the premise of the movie. They had been studying and tinkering with that alien craft for 40 years; you could tell that they'd made modifications to it to accommodate humans.

Spid, it's a movie. Pure fiction. If they'd gone with realism there wouldn't be any aliens with massive saucers just hovering in the air. Anyway, except for the president's speech the original was quite enjoyable so i'm looking forward to a new outing. And glad they got Goldblum.

I always figured, maths is a universal constant, so it would be easy for technology to talk to each other (even alien tech) because ya cannae change the mathamatical laws of the universe. Also, as stated above by other posters, the aliens themselves took control of our systems, why is it so hard to believe that we couldn't do the same. Humans hack other humans computers all the time, despite whatever safe-guards they have installed, tech is always evolving. And take into account that reverse engineering of the alien ship, you could theorise that all modern-day tech is based on what was found on the crashed alien craft. Maybe all computer soft-ware came from it .... basically anyone who snorted their nose at the film back in 1996 saying how ridiculous it was, clearly had no imagination or even a logical thought pattern ... like most film critics I know (heh) :)

There's also the other more simpler reason: it was a great sci-fi injoke. In the 1950's the aliens in War Of The Worlds were defeated by the common cold bug, a virus in their system if you will. In the 1990's the alien invasion is taken down by a computer virus (oh, how very 90's). Either way, it's still a great B-Movie that is fun to watch for all it's silliness and OTT moments, isn't that why we watch these big blockbusters? To be entertained and see stuff you don't see in normal every day life :-) Roll on 2015 and the sequel, I for one can't wait to see it.
