Joel Silver planning Escape From New York remake

Could become a new trilogy

Escape From New York is set to become the latest action franchise to get the reboot treatment, with Joel Silver planning to remake the 1981 film with a view to it becoming the first part of a new trilogy.

New Line had planned to reboot the series a few years, only for their rights to lapse, so Silver is teaming up with Studio Canal to take up the challenge.

Silver's vision is to cue up a new trilogy with an origin story, introducing a whole new audience to ex-con turned president-rescuing badass Snake Plissken.

Back when New Line were looking at the project, Tom Hardy was thought to be the favourite to succeed Kurt Russell, with Gerard Butler and Jeremy Renner also under consideration.

Liam Neeson's name has been mentioned in conjunction with this new incarnation, although given that he's around the same age as Russell, that would seem an odd choice for an origin story.

We reckon Hardy is the favourite among those mentioned so far, but don't be surprised to see some new names thrown into the mix over the coming weeks. Get set for the eyepatch to make its long-overdue revival...

Who should play Snake in the forthcoming reboot? Tell us, below!

It will have to hang together on the lead actors performance. Kurt Russel was pitch perfect, he's never been cooler, in fact, no one has ever been cooler.Even Clint Eastwood. Snake's the most baddass in every scene he's in, and that includes out bad assing Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine and goddam Isaac Hayes! In fact, why don't they just re release the original , and hand out free eye patches with every ticket!

wasnt gerard butler linked at one stage???..well,following his excellant portayal as Judge Dredd,im going to nail it to the mast, and predict that Karl Urban would be perfect as Snake...as for the rest of the cast....ron perlman as cabbie, michelle rodrigos as maggie, and alec baldwin as brains....and kurt russel as bob hawke!!

Given his character in Justified does no one else think Timothy Olyphant would work as Snake. He has the swagger and the voice down.

Only Kurt can be Snake....there's no other option. They did Indy IV....so Kurt Russell can do another "Escape..." movie! Give him a good story and some good FX for a proper goodbye from Snake on the big screen (...we don't wanna remember "Escape from LA").

Wasnt' there also supposed to be a 3rd film along the lines of 'Escape from planet Earth' that Carpenter was goign to do with Russell. I bet it would have been awful. As a story, EFNW is one that would work as a remake, but in terms of someone else portraying the character, that's a big eye-patch to fill. They need to cast someone who can completely make it their own and not just homage Russell. Hardy and Urban are good shouts.

Wasn't "Lockout" essentially a remake of EFNY? Pretty much exactly the same plot just a different setting.

This again??? Butler was said to be in pole position about 5 years ago when this rumor first started. He's the only one i can see doing it. Renner just doesn't look the part at all. I hope they don't bother and leave it alone. They already did one. And it wasn't that good. Lockout. Snow=Snake - in space.

I'm with Portablephantom...... well, first, it clearly should just be Kurt. Anything else is a bad idea.... But from the list of bad ideas, the BEST idea is Timothy Olyphant. After watching him on JUSTIFIED, I'm convinced that if you got the right script/director, he could even do the Man with No Name. And as crazy as this sounds, I think Snake is even TOUGHER to cover than Clint. (as dangoodfellow mentioned above) But Kurt just came out of retirement to make a couple movies, so let's not even CONSIDER someone else until he says 'no.' And how about we get a crack script and director, and do this thing RIGHT.

But Escape From New York was already remade, they called it Escape From LA!!! Enough already Hollywood, we get it you love butchering all the movies we love but let it go. Kurt Russell has set the bar to high for any replacement so we got the next best thing; Metal Gear Solid! Sure they were games but they were also 90% movie with 10% gameplay! We got a character called Snake who looks a little like Kurt Russell, once had an alias called Plisskin, the character had an eyepatch on several occasions (not all the same Snakes I know) plus the voice actor David Hayter did a Kurt Russell impression!! Guaranteed if this disastrous remake ever decides to rape our ears and eyeballs most people would probably think it was a Metal Gear movie anyway!!!
