Joseph Gordon-Levitt will appear in The Dark Knight Rises

Role unknown as yet

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is increasingly one of the most interesting actors working in Hollywood, which would explain why Chris Nolan wants to keep him close by casting him in The Dark Knight Rises.

The pair have just worked on Nolan’s other massive film Inception, and Deadline report that Gordon-Levitt “will be in [Rises] when Nolan starts production this spring”.

Who’ll he be playing? Nobody’s talking yet, though internet speculation has long been rife that Gordon-Levitt could tackle the role of cheeky villain The Riddler.

Knowing Nolan, though, he won’t want to bog down his last Batman gig with three new villains – he already has Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Tom Hardy as Bane.

For now, then, it’s a mystery. But still the kind of excellent news that has us feeling certain Rises can match Dark Knight for awesomeness. In fact, file this under ‘most awesome news we’ve heard this week’. Yes, really.

Loving Levitt? Glad he's in for Rises? Spin us a few lines below...

With Bane and Catwoman confirmed, and Dr Strange Rumored I struggle to see JGL playing any major character. Nolan wouldn't dare recast The Joker and Bale has already voiced his opinion about Robin.

If he IS playing the Riddler then that's getting to be quite a list of bad guys. Maybe this could be the mass breakout from Arkham Asylum orchestrated by Bane in the Knightfall story. The Gotham police having no option but to ask for Batman's help would be a way to return Batman to the hero status he gave up at the end of TDK.

I'm not convinced yet that Anne Hathaway as Catwoman will be playing a main villain; I think she could easily end up being more of a problematic love interest, with Bane and JGL as The Riddler playing the main baddies. If JGL is playing a baddie, the only one I could realistically see him playing is The Riddler because of his slight build. Think about it; Bane (though no intellectual slouch himself) providing the brawn with The Riddler providing the brain. If that not a recipe for Bats biggest problem yet, I dunno what is.

All the prisoners have escaped from Arkham right... I don't see why the opening 20 minutes could be a an tense, dramatic and exciting capture of a major villain.... set the films tone and go on to become "the greatest start to a movie ever"...

Remeber that Nolan said Hatahway was cast as Selina Kyle and he has never said Catwoman. That could leave the door open for the Riddler being the second villain; JGL could also play Zsasz who we've seen before in Batman Begins and features in one whole book of Knightfall. It looks like we will get some form of the Knightfall arc (of which Catwoman isn't involved until Knightquest) particularly as there are no mob bosses left after TDK.

Wonder what the chances are of him playing the Joker. Just because Sir Heath Ledger (god rest his soul), doesn't mean that the character cannot be used - even if only for a short amount of screen time. A great opening would be someone visiting the Joker in Arkham - Bane, the riddler or whoever else is in it - and riling him up stating that they are going to take down the Bat where the joker couldn't. Could be interesting to see what the legacy of the Joker has left while he is locked away.

I think that he and Heath have the same facial features. and with a few prosthetics he could possibly do a few fill in scenes as the joker. after the dark night released Nolan stated that he would only want to do a 3rd batman with heaths joker present. maybe during inception JGL showed Chris that he's capable. but this is a wild Idea in my own mind. black mask maybe if he's a bad guy, definitely not the boy wonder. look at interviews from batman begins and the dark knight. everyone producers actors writers all saying "we will never see Robin in this batman series" i will totally abandon all hope for this film if Robin does get cast.

One of the first things Nolan said about his third Batman was that the Riddler wouldn't be in it.

He looks too old to be Robin. Maybe some sort of politician? With Batman being rich he will be talking to politician just like last film. Maybe some sort of corporate bigshot i.e. a rival from another company or a newcomer to Wayne Enterprises.

He'll probably just be the new DA. Bale said he would never be in a movie where there was a Robin, but he didn't say that he would have a problem with Nightwing or Dick Grayson. He could also be The Riddler like everyone else suspects.

He might not be any character from the comics, maybe an over-zealous fed out to avenge Dent, failing that Deadshot (heres hoping).

It doesn't matter if he uses all of the villians. These guys have done an excellent job with the previous two movies and I'm sure this one will be good as well. Sometimes they do get ridiculous in the final film of a trilogy (I.e. Ewoks, Venom, the ending of the Matrix trilogy)

not gonna lie, jgl would be tight to have, but i'd rather have robin williams. both would be tight, but i can't see jgl pulling off a villain the way williams can.

The story arcs involving Bane could also include the Black Mask and the Riddler pretty easily. The Riddler is the choice I would bet on, a younger whiz kid version could be played very well by JGL. He could also play the Black Mask, a villain with childhood connection to Bruce Wayne, but that set up would have worked much better if set up through Batman Begins. Not likely but he might be playing Bullock (some thought Hardy would play him) and he could play Bruce Wayne's replacement if he is crippled by Bane as happens in certain story arcs. I would also welcome Robin Williams in a role. He could become a more real version of the Penguin, a political villain driving the hunt for Batman. The options are exciting.

causticjones is right, Christopher Nolan already publicly stated months ago that The Riddler will not be in the third installment of his Batman trilogy. However, Sam Raimi also stated that he didn't want to use Venom in Spider-Man 3. I personally called Joseph Gordon-Levitt to be the recast of The Joker after seeing Inception and noticing his striking facial similarities with Heath Ledger. I personally think it's a great idea and I hope that's what this is about. If I'm wrong, I can only hope he'll be Black Mask because he's my favorite villain but I really don't see that working well in a movie.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is IN TALKS to be in the movie, why do people always assume that "maybe" equals "definitely"? This article is pure speculation pretending to be fact. Need me to cite a source? I don't have to, the author of this article already did. Check it out his source for yourself.

I think JGL should be a character in TDKR. That would be a great idea. On another note, it appears that Nolan has way to many villians going. As for JGL as being a villian. Maybe JGL should play a minor role in this film. Then JGL sould appear in the next TDKR sequel since Bale has mentioned that he'll do if Nolan asked him to. Stretching his role to a "next Nolan film" does kinda create some excitement.

Is it not plausable that Dr. Strange plays a minor part in the creation and control (to an extent) of Bane since Strange's first appearance in the series saw him experiment with mental patients to create mindless brutes? This would then leave the role of major villain #2 to The Riddler (or JGL's character otherwise) and allow Catwoman to assist The Batman in defeating the 2/3 foes whilst simultaneously confusing the anti-hero with her trademark ambiguous sexual advances and disregard for staying within the law. However it turns out I'm sure Nolan will make it work without convoluting things or making a film which seems too long. I am convinced by his work with Williams on Insomnia, not to mention his work on the Batman franchise to date and JGL's versatility.
