Joss Whedon has categorically denied the rumours that Planet Hulk will serve as an inspiration for the events in The Avengers 2 and 3.
In an interview with IGN, Whedon was asked if there was any weight behind the claims that the Planet Hulk and World War Hulk comic-book storylines would be used in future Avengers movies.
Whedon’s succinct response was, “Well, I’m really not supposed to comment, but no, that’s nonsense."
And with that, hopes of seeing a space-set standalone Hulk movie with Gladiator overtones are dashed. Well, unless you’ve already seen the lame direct-to-DVD animated adaptation.
Without a wild story arc and a chance to flex his ginormous green muscles in a larger universe, it’s hard to know how Hulk could satisfyingly lead his own movie, which goes some way to explaining why a solo vehicle for Bruce Banner’s alter ego has yet to be confirmed for Marvel’s Phase Two or Three.
Iron Man 3, Marvel’s first Phase Two movie, opens in the UK on 26 April 2013. The Avengers 2 follows on 1 May 2015.
