Joss Whedon talks Avengers 2 plot

Says there is no happy ending in sight

Joss Whedon is set to be a busy man over the next few years, what with his new role as creative “Godfather” for Marvel’s Phase 2 projects, but his foremost priority is still to deliver a satisfying sequel to The Avengers.

Work has already begun on a script for the second film, and while Whedon has been careful not to give away any specific plot points, he can at least hint at some of the themes he plans to explore in part two.

"The creation of the team is not the happy ending," he said. "It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I'm digging, just twist that knife. And that's exciting for me."

Yikes. Does this mean Joss is ready to kill off one of his super-team? We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, there’s the rest of Phase 2 to look forward to, a series of films Whedon believes to be in very safe hands.

"Very talented people are writing and directing these movies, and what I don't want to be is the guy they dread, who's going to come in and say, 'Oh, well I have the power to change this.' I'm not that."

The Avengers 2 opens in the UK on 1 May 2015.

What do you want to see from the Avengers sequel? Tell us, below!

The only person he could kill off would be Stark as someone else can use the suit. There's only one Hulk, Thor and Captain America, but I suppose Black Widow and Hawkeye are cannon fodder too. It will depend on how long RDJ wants to play Iron Man, this will be his 5th film as that character and he isn't getting any younger!

i have a feeling the phase 2 films will somehow include a search for the ever elusive hulk again and he will satisfyingly return in act 3 of the avengers 2. and black widow will die and come back as galactus

I think if anyone gets it, it will be Black Widow or Hawkeye, if in fact this does mean a team member dying! Killing off any of the "big 4" means killing of a Marvel sister franchise. It could mean maybe Pepper, Selvig, Rhodes (curiously entirely absent from the Avengers movie) or even Fury could meet an untimely end leading in to an all out revenge plotline for the unavoidable Avengers 3. Or in fact it could mean absolutley nothing and will simply follow the darker mood of most "second of a trilogy" formulas.

Sounds to me like Josh might go down the Civil War route. And if any member was to see their demise it would be Stark basically because Downey is in his forties and his contract with Marvel is about to expire.

so Joss IS going to kill off Hawkeye! i hope he gives us enough emotional connection to him to make it meaningful, but with Joss at the wheel I don't think there'll be anything to worry about.

As much as I would love the death of a hero to happen on the big screen there is only a handful of Avengers who actually die in the comics and Whedon is one man not to mess with the comics and the fans with out risking losing his job. therefore there is only one person on the current team who can die and its the 1st Avengers Cap!

I'm not sure about the Civil War being used in the films. It might need a couple of films to cover it and as we only saw them work as a team briefly in the first one it might be a bit silly to break them up as early as the second. Saying that though, after the level of destruction after the invasion and the deleted scene with Maria Hill regarding the issue of accountability, the Registration Act seems pretty likely.

Surely he would stick with the comics and have Cap die at the end of a Civil War story-arc.....but in comic books, no-one stays dead for long (Cap comes back eventually). Is that going to be the same in comic book movies?

I wouldn't say Rhodes/War Machine was "curiously absent" from the Avengers. After all, the Avengers was a SHIELD initiative and they were brought together by Fury whereas War Machine, in the movies at least, would be answerable to the DoD, the Air Force specifically. For all we know Rhodes was on deployment at the time.

@Monkeynuts30 In the same way Thor gave us our first look at Hawkeye, and Iron Man 2 gave us an introduction to Black Widow, I felt that Iron Man 2 was also the catalyst for the introduction of War Machine in the Avengers on screen universe. With the complete ommision of War Machine in The Avengers, Iron Man 2 seems all the more pointless a sequel, to me at least. With an alien invasion happening on US soil, I think at the very least DoD would have been alerted and ready to respond, with no better man the Rhodes to put the call in to Stark for an assement and update. It is a minor quibble of course, but I feel that Whedon just doesn't fancy the War Machine as intergral to the Avengers universe and will dispense with him in one form or another above most other characters we already know.

I hope the Civil War plot will be used at some point, i think they could easily set it up in the second and bring it to a conclusion in the third. Hopefully by then they will be able to bring Spiderman into it but i would love to see Cap Vs Iron man!

Killing off Black Widow or Hawkeye seems far to predicable, knowing Joss Wheadon it will be really shocking and not what any off us will expect. Also I like the whole begining of the Civil war story line
