Kurt Russell drops out of Django Unchained

As does Sacha Baron Cohen

Django Unchained has suffered a double blow in the casting stakes, with both Kurt Russell and Sacha Baron Cohen dropping out of Quentin Tarantino's latest.

Russell is the second actor to leave the role of Ace Woody, having initially replaced Kevin Costner for the part. Costner had cited scheduling issues, but as yet, no reason has been given by Russell's camp for his departure.

Woody is one of the film's many villains, a ruthless trainer who pits various slaves against each other for the entertainment of the public. Could it be that the character is too controversial for A-list tastes, or is it purely coincidence that both Costner and Russell have dropped out?

Sacha Baron Cohen's departure seems a little more straightforward, with scheduling conflicts precluding his involvement. He was only earmarked for a cameo in any case, so his absence shouldn't rock the boat too much.

Meanwhile, QT still has plenty of acting talent at his disposal, with Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson all set to star. Django Unchained opens in the UK on 18 January 2013.

Who would you like to see replace Russell? Make your suggestions, below...

Maybe Tarantino has gone sightly too far with this villain? Interested in finding out..

I'd hardly call Kevin Costner an A-lister! Thank God he dropped out, or else I would have been majorly put off. Shame about Russell, though..

He used to be. Ah the Hollywood machine.. I wonder why it is that he no longer is. At what point are you not A-list? Can't be down to box office alone...

I think its very much down to box office.... Shame about KR, he was fantastic in Death Proof... Although I highly doubt he'd find anything too messy to act, its probably just scheduling or something. Replace him with Niel Patrick Harris in Harold & Kumar mode :P

But then, Clooney's films don't exactly set the box office on fire.. or Brad Pitts and yet they are and probably always will be A-list.

The A-list doesn't have anything to do with box office but people who generate the most 'buzz'. Look at a Jennifer Aniston...despite playing the same character in every film (known as Owen Wilson syndrome), she still gets work in high profile movies. See also live-action Cameron Diaz movies..

Wouldn't it be great if there actually was a real list that some Hollywood lackey updates every month. Wonder what you'd have to do to get on that list. They should make a film about it. Starring Will Ferrel. And Kevin Costner.

Bridges and Rourke are good choices. So are these guy, who just happen to have worked with QT before. DeNiro, Travolta, Keitel, Madsen, Keaton, Roth, Buscemi, Parks, Forester, Stoltz, Walken, and Bruce Willis. Wow, I felt like I just read off the credits to Pulp Fiction.

If Tarantino really went too far Sam Jackson would say "he deserves to die and that he hopes he burns in hell." It's when either Sam or Jamie drops out is when we should worry.

Hi King, Don't worry about it, just to cap the Ford debate, yes those 2 films were okay but there was a time when Ford starring films were great and I just don't like the great man slumming it, I never thought I'd see a film of his go straight to DVD. Your suggestions are good Simon Callow especially. Pierce Brosnan would fit the bill as well. In the end I think Micheal Parks should get it being a QT favourite.

@TheKingofCinema, I agree Tom Waits would be good but think Christopher Walken or De Niro could play the part well too. Also Ron Perlman or Gary Oldman would be interesting. Or maybe even Woody Harrelson.

Kurt Russell did not accept an offer to play in the Expendables because according to his agent he wasn't interested in ensembles at this time. In other words, I think he assumed his character had a much larger role as in Tombstone. Remember his role in Grindhouse was not an ensemble. Perhaps it started out much larger and was eventually cut down. Either that or the role required him to show his shriveled up old wiener.
