Bruce Beresford has been cooking up one of those prestige films you just know wants to get noticed when awards season kicks off.
He’s packing it with a quality cast, too – Kyle McLachlan, Bruce Greenwood and Joan Chen have all jumped aboard Mao’s Last Dancer, which takes its true-life tale from Li Cunxin. Taken from his village at the age of 11, he was swept off to Beijing to study ballet, which led to him visiting America on a tour, falling for an American and forging a chance to defect. He ended up becoming a respected hoofer in the States and Australia.
Beresford starts the cameras rolling in March and Variety knows the tune.
