Liam Neeson talks Dark Knight Rises

Quotes suggest a cameo is unlikely

Liam Neeson has been talking to MTV about upcoming bat-sequel The Dark Knight Rises, and from the sounds of things, talk of a Ra’s al Ghul cameo might be a bit wide of the mark.

“I’m eager to see this one,” he said of the new film, before adding, “I haven’t got a fucking clue what it’s about.” This despite the fact that his voice was used in the teaser trailer, sparking rumours of a Ra’s al Ghul return.

“Chris Nolan's made wonderful films, very rich, dark and complex, especially [The Dark Knight]," he said, before referring to how the last film was “cloaked in tragedy," after Heath Ledger’s death.

The internet had previously been rife with rumours that Neeson had filmed a cameo for The Dark Knight Rises, although given how close Nolan keeps his cards to his chest, that could still be the case. Perhaps Neeson filmed his scene without knowing exactly how the rest of the film was going to pan out?

Either that, or he’s an excellent bluffer who’s thrown everyone off the scent by pretending to be completely clueless as to what Nolan has planned. We’ll have to wait until the film arrives on 20 July 2012 to find out for sure.

Is Liam bluffing, or have we seen the last of Ra's al Ghul? Tell us what you think...

I'd be surprised if he didn't appear in some form or other. The soundbite of his voice in the trailer was subtly different from the way he said the same dialogue in Batman Begins, suggesting he'd re-recorded it for DKR. It seems a little odd that they'd bring him in to do something as small as that (i.e. why not just use the original version of the dialogue) unless he was also doing something else.

Maybe I am very wide of the mark with this comment, but I have a feeling that the footage "we" all saw with Anne Hathaway was a red herring, after all it wasn't pulled by Warner Bros. If anyone knows how to pull a long can then it's Christopher Nolan.

@FBPFlaherty You could be onto someting here. It's felt very odd; this whole campaign of 'leaks', 'rumours' and 'footage'. WB commisioned a huge, ground-breaking (at the time) PR narrative for TDK, so it would seem logical to try to replicate that success with something equally astounding. Nolan *could be* hiding TDKR in plain sight. That would be a fantastic piece of mis-direction.

@FBPFlaherty- we've always been thinking that. No-one has had issues with previous villians or the tumbler, Batpod, Lamborghinis- and now there are issues? It would be interesting to all of a sudden see drastic changes. But, @FBPMurray37, they probably had multiple takes, recordings, etc. from the original. But I could really do without Neeson, I enjoyed Scarecrow better. With possibilities of Talia, he may show up, but I don't want a revival- allow a flashback-exposition at best.

@nkutzler - Good shout, I hadn't thought about an older, alternative take. Although my gut still says it's a new recording and that he's going to be involved in DKR in some form - what with all the talk of this being a natural bookend to Nolan's vision of Batman. If that's the case, then themes from the first two movies would likely re-emerge (and the use of Ra's voiceover in the trailer would suggest this is the case). Flashbacks to Ra's al Ghul would all fit in quite nicely with that. That said I don't think an appearance by Ra's would be in any form other than flashbacks though. Otherwise his resurrection would completely undermine Nolan's determination to keep the movie grounded in a 'realistic' world. The idea of Ra's surviving the Wayne Tower explosion would destroy that concept, as there is no way he could have survived the smash in the way it played out on screen in Batman Begins.

I know Nolan is trying to keep the films grounded in reality, but I don't know if it really works for Ra's al Ghul. Pretty much the hallmark of this character is his ability to be resurrected/regenerated and it's all part of his mystique. Although I think Batman Begins is a brilliant film, the development of Ra's was the one fault I had with it. I sort of wish he would be resurrected for The Dark Knight Rises though, especially as Talia is likely to be in this one (not 100% sure if it's been confirmed) and her story (and relationship with Batman) is not nearly as interesting without the conflict of interest from her father. Although it does seem most likely that he will just appear in flashbacks/voiceovers, it would have been interesting to see him return.

Has anyone played Batman:Arkham City ?? I'd put it on a par with the Nolan films, an outstanding piece of work. Brits know how to handle the Batman franchise.

I like how Nolan had Scarecrow cameo in TDK, and it makes me wonder whether Ra's al Ghul might still appear in a 'nightmare' sequence if Scarecrow were to appear again and use his gas on Batman. This may then go on to explain why Batman looked so afraid of Bane in the teaser if he is under the effect of the gas. Perhaps this may lead into a storyline a la the Knightfall saga... It might also bookend the series nicely if Nolan were to show Batman defeating Scarecrow one final time and (I suppose) curing himself of his fear of his own past (the death of his parents, the death of Rachael) and his 'haunting' by Ra's al Ghul's memory. If it is to be the last in the Nolan Batman series, should he give Bruce Wayne/Batman a proper - that is, definite - ending, or just leave it open for Warner Bros to push the series further if desired?
