Live Action Akira Gets New Writers

Children Of Men scribes will try not to mangle the Manga

Some time ago, Leonardo DiCarpio's production shingle Appian Way bought the rights to develop a live action Akira pic, but the project had been thought dead in the water.

Breathing new life into the lungs of the adaptation is news that screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (best name ever!), the typists behind Children Of Men and Iron Man (before Shane Black's worst-kept-secret doctoring duties) are chained to their laptops hard at work on a new script.

Fans are polarised as to whether a live action adaptation, especially a Hollywood produced one, is a bad idea or an awful one, especially when coupled with initial rumours of DiCaprio taking on lead acting duties alongside his production role.

Those rumors proved unfounded however, and though there were brighter ideas circulating in the form of a Joseph Gordon Levitt attachment, the writer's strike seemed to put the disc brakes frimly on the front wheel of the project.

Now, with two creditiable writers taking a crack at a script that barely worked in animated form, does this mean things are firmly back on track? We'd love to see the results of a big budget adaptation, but it may be a risk Hollywood is not willing to take on a niche comic property (remember Watchmen?).

Time, as always, will tell. Until then, share your thoughts! Bad idea? Awful idea? Looking forward to it?

No DiCaprio should not leave it alone because he is one of the pretty people and therefore should be allowed to do whatever he likes. Pretty people rarely if ever do anything wrong because they are better than the rest of us. I saw the behind the scenes making of the original and nobody pretty worked on it and there were no pretty people in it because they are drawings and it turned out awesome so imagine how much better it is going to be when a pretty person works on it.

Yosarian25 - I wouldn't class Dicaprio as one of the pretty people anymore, infact I think he's lost most of his sex appeal and has actually proved himself as one of this generations best actors. anyway, I really like Akira but am quite intrigued as to what a live action version could be like. At least its not another remake, well, not a proper one at least.

ashley.russell-I wouldn't class him as pretty either but he's certainly attractive. I think Dicaprio proved he was a fine actor long before he gained the pretty boy tag with his performances in what's eating gilbert grape and especially for me in this boys life. What I really mean by the above comment is that I think as DiCaprio got older he showed real smarts aligning himself with the best directors and talent around. He seems to have a real savvy about the business he is in so that's why if it has to be done, then there could be much worse people to do it. However if you asked me should it be remade at all then i would have to say NO

Terrible news. Akira won't work as a live action film.

The basic vibe and concept of Akira is way too dark for Hollywood to ever make a successful movie out of.. They would have to tone it down so much to make it even remotely financially viable .. And the budget would have to be HUGE to do it any justice, so it REALLY ISNT WORTH TRYING!

Can't work, won't work. we don't like change. Let Akira stay buried under the olympic stadium where he belongs.

Anything that brings more attention to Akira is a good thing. Even if Hollywood does blow it, like everyone here expects, more people will be exposed to the original film and comics. I say woohoo! "this chapter's finished" "gentlemen, we're going to the olympics" "Kaneeedaaaa!"
