George Miller might finally have cracked the way to bring iconic hero Mad Max back to the screen without having to deal with an aging Mel Gibson – he’s planning a 3D anime pic based ion the apocalyptic character.
“The anime is an opportunity for me to shift a little bit about what anime is doing because anime is ripe for an adjustment or sea change,” he tells MTV.
“It’s coming in games and I believe it’s the same in anime. There’s going to be a hybrid anime where it shifts more towards Western sensibilities. Kurosawa was able to bridge that gap between the Japanese sensibilities and the West and make those definitive films.”
The plot, meanwhile, looks to be lifted from Miller’s abortive attempt to get a fourth Max film running in 2003 before the money collapsed.
And it looks like Mel won’t be back at all. “We’ll probably go a different route,” explains Miller. Bad blood? Lower budget? We’re not sure. Maybe he’ll change his mind as he gets into it.
Mad Max without Mel? Can it work? And as a ‘toon? Speak your brains…
