Marc Webb confirms yet another villain for The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Peter is going to have his hands full

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 might already have crammed in three villains in the form of Electro, Rhino and Green Goblin, but according to director Marc Webb, the antagonists won’t stop there.

Webb recently took to Twitter to reference B.J. Novak’s character in the new film, who turns out to be none other than one “A. Smythe”...

Now, for the non-comic-book aficionados out there, that moniker refers to one Alistair Smythe, the crippled son of the Oscorp scientist, Spencer Smythe, responsible for creating an army of robotic “Spider-Slayers”.

In the comic, Smythe eventually creates a mech-suit for himself, to become the ultimate Spider-Slayer. Just how much of this will happen in the film remains to be seen, but it’s safe to say that Smythe is no friend of the wall-crawler...

Webb certainly doesn’t seem about to shy away from stacking the odds against Spidey, this time out. It’s almost as if he hasn’t seen Spider-Man 3...

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will open in the UK on 18 April 2014.

I am worried that there won't be enough time in the movie to build these villains up. That's what I thought of Spider-Man 3. There could have been so much more of Venom. I really only felt like I knew the Green Goblin. Eh, still will be exciting though.

The "too many villains" issue that plagued Spider-Man 3 was mainly down to all three having separate agendas and stories. It seems that there is a multitude of villains (including the now confirmed Alistair Smythe), but they all, at least from the trailer, appear to have one agenda and come from a single point-of-origin (Oscorp). Having Smythe be the guy who is creating the equipment (Goblin Glider, Rhino's armour, Vulture's Wings, Doc Ock's arms, etc) is actually inspired.

People need to calm down I am pretty sure Electro and Dane Dehaan are going to be the main villains for Spidey 2. I don't see any problems with Webb fleshing out the universe and planting seeds for the other sequels.
