Mark Wahlberg interested in making The Fighter 2

“We’re gonna do the Ward/Gatti trilogy”

the fighter

Mark Wahlberg missed out on any chance at an Oscar this year, despite giving a career-best performance in The Fighter. But the actor doesn’t seem to have noticed.

Word has it that the former underwear model is hoping to launch himself straight back into the world of boxer Micky Ward for a sequel.

“Now we’re gonna talk about doing number two,” Wahlberg tells Extra. “We’re gonna do the Ward/Gatti trilogy and make it real.”

Wahlberg is there referring to the real Ward’s fights with adversary Arturo Gatti, which are infamous thanks to their brutal, no-punches-pulled content.

With The Fighter having landed itself two Academy Awards over the weekend (one for Christian Bale, and one for Melissa Leo), not to mention its box office success (over $100m worldwide), we’re sure the Weinsteins would be keen for a follow-up.

Fight? Or flight? Think a sequel would ruin the original? Speak out below...

This is a terrible idea. The movie is great as a stand alone piece and a sequel will only tarnish the original. If anything, the script should have been drafted to include the Gatti fights and cut out some the filler (and there's planty of it) in the middle. Bad idea all round. Reeks of studio heads demanding sequel.

As an avid boxing fan I just couldn't figure out why they left the Gatti fights out of the movie, it would have been a much better way to end the movie by doing the first Gatti fight. The first fight is one of the greatest fights to EVER happen, it was epic back and fourth action.
