Martyrs remake gets director Daniel Stamm

Last Exorcism man to helm

Martyrs

The Last Exorcism director Daniel Stamm has signed on to remake 2008 French horror Martyrs.

The film - which has many fans here in the TF office - made waves thanks to its graphic, uncompromising style and full-blooded shocks.

Martyrs is very nihilistic,” says Stamm. “The American approach [that I'm looking at] would go through all that darkness but then give a glimmer of hope. You don’t have to shoot yourself when it’s over.”

While Stamm did solid work with Last Exorcism, fans of the savage original Martyrs may feel slightly wary after the director made a bizarre comparison between the film and, uh, a certain Gump.

“It plays on things that are familiar - like two friends who can’t be separated, kind of a Forrest Gump and Jenny situation,” says the director.

Odd comparison aside, going on Stamm’s previous film work and ignoring his comments, Martyrs could still come out smelling of roses. Though we’d have preferred it if the original had just been left alone, really.

no no no, Martyrs is one of the best horror films of the last 10 years, it does not need to "go through all that darkness but then give a glimmer of hope". It's not about hope in that sense, it's about so much more than a quick Saturday night thrill which I expect an American remake would demand. Think of something original FCS!

Ah, so we're allowed to be unhappy about this remake, but the short-lived prospect of the original Martyrs director remaking a modern classic like Hellraiser was okay? Right, got it. How about we just ban all remakes/reboots/reimaginings for five years, say, and give us all a break?

Why why why why why???? This is a film where I genuinely felt sympathetic for the protagonists and couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks afterwards. I do not think that an english language remake is going to create the same arthouse mood and feeling that the original created and is just another cash cow for the big wigs trying to latch onto something that creates money. Is there no love of film left in the industry anymore or do instant foreign classics need to be mutilated for the benefits of producers pockets???
